Paris: Picasso Museum

I had read in the Irreverant Guide to Paris that this museum contained few works and was considered only a very minor attraction. In the book I'm reading now it sounds like it is full of masterpieces and is a 'must see.' What have some of you middle of the road arties thought of this museum?

It is not the best museum of his work. If you're a big fan, go. If not, it is easily passed over.

If you have the museum pass just stop by and see for yourself--nothing lost. It is near the Carnavalet which IS definitely worth a visit--and is free.

We enjoyed it very much, but I'm a big fan. I would not say it is filled with major works, but it is an interesting collection in a beautiful old mansion.

I thoroughly enjoyed this museum, and I don't consider myself a "big fan." I learned so much about his life, and felt I got a sense of each of his periods.

I'm not a big fan, but we thought that it was important to see it and the museum pass made it easy to just 'pop in.' I found it interesting and it did help that I had read a little bit before hand about Picasso's life and his art. The building itself is extremely interesting. If you have a pass, and you have some time (even just an hour) go see it.

I really enjoyed visiting this museum. I did not go to this on my first Paris visit, but instead on my 4th visit. Each time I return to Paris, I try to include a new museum that I have not gone to yet. I thought the mansion that the works are exhibited in was terrific, and I enjoyed looking at Picasso works housed in this setting. I did enjoy this Picasso museum far more then the one in Barcelona. It was great to explore "only Picasso" in this interesting setting. Of course after (or before) the exhibit, you are in the Marais and it is a perfect neighborhood to shop, stroll, eat, and enjoy Paris. If you enjoy art and Picasso put this on your list.

So, what museum is considered to be the foremost one for Picasso? I know the one at Montserrat had quite a few.

I am not a huge Picasso fan but I loved this museum. It's been a while, but aside from the beautiful mansion it's in, I recall it had a lot of his earlier, more realistic work which I'd not seen before. I particularly remember seeing photos of his children & then art (drawings & sculpture) from those photos. And the neighborhood it's in is fantastic. I still have some prized costume jewelry I found in a boutique right nearby.

Good point Robert_Brandewine! I have been fortunate to have seen a ton of Picasso, either at exhibits at The Metropolitan Museum of Art in NYC, MOMA, special exhibits in London, etc. I think the artwork of Picasso may just be split up and scattered amoung various museums around the world, the museum in Barcelona, and of course the Picasso Museum in Paris Marais. I did not go to Montserrat, but the Paris Picasso Museum was something I did enjoy very much.

I loved the Picasso museum and I am not a huge fan of Picasso. I went with my sisters and we had a fun afternoon, the most irreverant thing about the museum is the art itself. We had some good laughs. There are lots of works - I'm not sure how many are masterpieces - exhibited in an attractive mansion in a great neighborhood. If you have time, go. If you have only 3 days in Paris, save it for next time.

My husband, a Picasso fan, loves the Picasso Museum because of the way it shows the artist's development over the years.

There are few artists as controversial as Picasso and consequently opinions on the museum vary widely. The attraction of the Paris Museum (and Barcelona)is that it covers 75 years of his life and works in all categories (paintings, sculptures, ceramics, sketches, engravings) in a beautiful mansion.

There are hundreds of works, thousands including the sketches and engravings, and there are also works by Cezanne, Braque and a few others that were owned by Picasso. Of course, not all are masterpieces.

Go.

I also enjoyed this museum quite a bit and I'm not a big Picasso fan. I was also impressed with the space. My kids were with us at the time (9 & 11), they're not museum kids but even they enjoyed it. In general I prefer the smaller spaces, I am always overwhelmed in the big museums.

We enjoyed the Picasso museum. It is very nicely arranged and the works are representative of his career. I don't know that it would be a must see for someone who does not understand what modern art is all about, but it is worth visiting.

About 10 years ago I would have said skip it, but we went again last November and it has improved greatly. Not only are there more works exhibited, they are shown better and lighted better.

The building itself is worth the visit, especially the wonderful vaulting in the basement. They have used it to great advantage in display.

Go to the archives too. They give lots of information about Picasso's life and the archives are actually open to the public. There are drawers and drawers of things and you can just pull open a drawer and look. We were amazed.

I suspect the book that said it contained few works was written more than six or seven years ago. Check the date . . . or it may not have been updated in the latest edition.

It really is worth a visit since it covers many different periods in his life.
