kerouac,

I think I responded to his asking for restauranats nearby his apartment, or in the area, at least. I could have given him restaurants all over Paris, but he specifically asked for nearby ones.

If mobility is the problem, most certainly the buses will be of great help to you. There are buses to most every area in Paris right here..right across the street from me are #69, #87 and #42.

The new card is called Navigo Decouverte. You purchase the card folder and then re-load the pass weekly. It runs from Mon - Sun and new week can be purchased on Thursday, or is it Wed now? You can buy a carnet or whatever for fill in days.

The Constant restaurants will not be open Christmas Eve. They will be closed til the 28th. It will be a more difficult time to find places open.

The Christmas lights are up and going in most areas now.

Glad o be helpful with whatever information while here..

a bientot

Yes, Joan, I did not mean to sound critical of either him or you. It's just that the way some questions are phrased sometimes makes it sound as though people are unaware of all of the possiblities.

I will check on a couple local places that might be open Christmas Eve and Christmas Day and report back.

kerouac,

You are right, with mobility problems the buses are great. We may be able to give him some more restaurants to choose from.

I do prefer the buses now that I have taken them more.

RE the Christmas restaurants...Sundays and Mondays are not the best times to call with the many being closed. I will check them out, though.

Joan & Kerouac,

Thank you for your continued responses. Kerouac, I did not think of you as critical at all. Your suggestion to use the transporation system was well-taken.

Joan, I will look forward to your report.

LikToTravel,

After 15 trips to Paris, I took my first bus ride last week. I found the Bus Drivers to be very friendly and helpful. I fell asleep on bus #95 and was awaken by a very sweet driver telling me in French that it was time to get off the bus. I told my husband I will tackle the subway system next time I am in Paris (I am intimidated by the subway system).

Joan,

Do you need a picture with the Navigo Decouverte?

cafegoddess,

Yes, you need picture for Navigo..smaller than passport..about 1 1/2" x 1 1/2"..cut off part of top of head and sides..they don't care.

The buses are much better..you can see some things along the way where yuou might want to stop..also no up and down all the steps, etc.

I did check Fontaine de Mars and they will be closed Xmas Eve and Day. I will try othr restaurants in the area other than the brasseries.

Sky has cleared somewhat..still warm..

I need to go to Notre Dame to light a couple candles..

a bientot..

There are photo machines in most metro stations and all Monoprix stores, so don't worry about the photos. The new photomaton booths are really excellent and allow you capture exactly the photo that you want on the video screen (you even get multiple tries if you get it wrong). They are not at all like the old machines that would flash at the exact moment that you closed your eyes or licked your lips.

I lucked out when I used the photo machine at Ecole Militaire last fall. Often they were out of order at places. Perhaps that is no longer a problem. I did mine at EC about 11:00 in the morning..not rush hour and the person on duty put it all together for me.

I went to Notre Dame, did my candles. It was quite crowded. A Sunday, I think.

I stopped at Cafe Constant on my return and need to get the pictures for you.

It has turned colder. Tomorrow will change coats.

Photos from dejeuner at Cafe Constant.

Bistrot Paul Bert, 18 Rue Paul Bert, 75011 Paris, +33 (0)1 43 72 24 01

A popular restaurant. I may be going there one night this week.

It takes a bit longer to get brave enough to use the buses..don't know why,but once you try it a couple times, I think you will prefer it.

Joan,
The pictures of all of your meals are fantastic. Could you please tell us what you had today at Cafe Constant? It looks wonderful!
Also, thank you for starting the part 2 thread.

Poconolady,

I had a salade d'artichauts (artichoke salad)
Croustillant de Crevettes (shrimp)
verre du bourgone rouge (red burgundy wine)
cafe creme

Yes, the Part two thread will load much faster...

I forgot to say yesterday that when I was on the bus returning home that I saw a Prius taxi!!I thought that was different.

There are so many, many car models that you see here that we do not have..some several years before we receive them and some that we never receive. Always see this. The small SUV types are the popular ones, it seems. More practical. The Smart cars just zip around others and take off. There are many of them.

Hi, Joan.

Colder AND Christmas decorations...sounds perfect!

Re: buses. When I first came across a "bus thread", I was intimidated too. Metro seemed so easy. I think it's simply that there are SO many more bus lines and intersecting options. It's also relatively easy to figure out where metro stations are, which lines are served, and how to get from one to the other. But there are hundreds of bus stops and one must figure out which stops serves the particular direction one wants to travel. That said, it's not hard. I persevered and worked my way through it at home, long before trying it on the streets of Paris. I now far prefer the bus to the metro.

Lainee: The buses use the same system as the metro: each bus is marked with its route number and the front window shows the direction it is traveling (which end of its established route). Go to the RATP pages and select ONE bus line near your residence. Stick with that bus, follow its route. Note where it crosses other bus lines, especially major hubs (like Hotel de Ville). Then start playing around with the options: neighborhood maps will show where the bus stops are, line maps show the name of each stop on the route. Once you've gotten comfortable with that one route, you can start working on multi-bus treks involving transfers.

Robespierre had an excellent Paris Bus thread several years ago. I can no longer find it, but perhaps someone could post a link to it.

Joan,

That fish looks delicious! It looks similar to what I had the first time I when to Les Cocottes.

Thank you for giving me my daily Paris fix.
