Hi Joan, we share your love of this part of the 7th; you might want to check out Leo le Lion, across the street from Florimond. The chef, Didier Mery, is from Le Divellec, and specializes in great seafood dishes. More pricey than Florimond, I admit, but much less than Divellec. Also, I haven't seen any recent posts on D'Chez Eux; have you tried it recently?

Gracie-Joan,

Many thanks for the shuttle info, although mine is already arranged.

Now that I'm packing more or less what would be winter clothing, I hope the weather has not suddenly turned to 80 degrees !

Please keep me posted. I leave about 2 PM on Thursday.

Regards
Mahya

Good morning...

I will give Leo the Lion a try..read some pluses and minuses..D'Chez Eux...have not been in several years..did Putin dining there spoil it?

Upon returning home last night ave La Folle Avoine, the tiny place almost beneath me..Max or something..need to look at it..anyway, it was packed!! Tiny..a bar, tables..had white tablecloths.

La Folle Avoine: They had moules as a special..I could not pass that up..a large bowl of moules served with a side bowl of frites. I then had dessert and a cafe creme. I restaurant seats in the 20's. Pleasant. Gal who became quite rushed..nice, but not real professional..or maybe just a bit "green". I don't think I would go across town for it...153 Grenelle probably a better choice between the two. I will give it another try while I am here..order something from the carte.

Looks like another bright sunny day..who knows what I will find today...a bientot....Joan

Thanks for the report on La Folle Avoine. Yes, it does sound as if it's not worth traveling for but a nice neighborhood possibility for those staying nearby. Please do post if you try it again.

"Did you ever eat at L'Escargot Montorgueil? That's another one I was thinking of trying..."

I went there for lunch today with my family. I go there every time I am in Paris, it's one of my favourites. But I have to say it has become quite expensive.

We had 2 x 1 dozen escargots as starters, 2 main courses, 1 small main course (grilled fish on potato puree) for child, 2 deserts (they charged 14E for a chocolate eclair!), 1 glass of wine, 1 coffee and 1 badoit. The bill? 196 Euros!!!

Still the best escargots in town in my humble opinion. The atmosphere is great, still an institution, with the price tag I may add!

Give it a try by all means!

Enjoy Paris!

Swagman,

Thank you so much for the info on L'Escargot Montorgueil! There are 3 of us going to Paris who are fans of escargot.

We were a bit confused about how many/what flavors to order (basil, curry, roquefort...) We figured we'd mix up two or three dozen and then move on to the main courses (like you did). There's a chocolate souffle we want to try there as well!

Thanks again for the review & details!

Tonight I went to a little restaurant almost beneath me..7 stories below, that is. Cafe Max,

I love it..exudes funky character..red ceiling and molding, black walls with many pictures and large mirrors..big bar and large mirror behind it.Small place.

Max is a jolly character. Appears to be a large local following..younger working people who gather for drinks and then dinner. Max fills large bowls with ice and puts in bottles of champagne..they line up and gather around br. They were just starting to sit down as I left.

Chilly today..a scarf felt very good..just plain cold tonight..glad I did not go far!!

The ET is doing its on the hour sparkle right now out my window!!

A bientot.....Joan

Swagman,

I went on L'escargot Montorgueil's website after reading your post. I love snails and only eat them on special occasions (way too fattening with all that butter). I have a question -- I would like to go there for Sunday lunch, but only order snails. My husband, who doesn't particularly care for the little critters, would order something else. We already have dinner plans that evening at Mon Vieil Ami and because we aren't big eaters (especially at lunch time), I don't know if I can have two big meals on the same day. Would I offend the restaurant if I only ordered, say, one dozen escargot? I just can't eat all that food without needing a nap afterwards.

Thanks.

If there are 3 of you going and you all love snails, get the 'Spiral' - 36 snails in all 3 flavours for 66 Euros. I'll let you in a secret, I had that all to myself a few years back, yum yum!!

freberta

Not at all if you just want to try snails.

The table next to us today were two young ladies from Hongkong. One ordered a dozen, the other ordered half a dozen and they ordered a bottle of still water. They were still being served courteously. I spoke to them afterwards, they were sisters and the younger one studies in London. So they could be on a budget but have read somewhere about the 'must try' snails from L'Escargot. So there you go.

BTW, I should mention whilst there was no 'Menu Enfant', my son's grilled fish was really really good and they charged 12E for it. The French really know how to look after children in restaurants.

Enjoy!

Swagman,

Thanks for the words of advice. More than 30 years ago, I was travelling through Europe with my college friend who had spent her junior year in Italy. While we were in Italy, she insisted that I order all the courses, but all I ate at the time was pasta. I'll never forgive her for making me spend all that money on wasted food (that was before the age of credit cards and all I had was $1,000 in traveller's cheques that had to last 2 months and cover lodging, meals, souvenirs, etc.). But again, thanks. I will order my escargot and be as happy as a clam!

I have been staying in the 4th the past couple of weeks and it has been great. I find it to be a real working part of Paris.

Have you ever stayed in this part of Paris?

I think I read somewhere along you have been staying over in the 6th/7th exclusively for some years. I would like to do that on our next trip.

In your opinion, what are the main differences between these arrondissements?

Your advice is much appreciated.

Swagman,

I have stayed in apartments in the 6th, Ile St. Louis and the 7th. Hotels in the 1st, 6th.

I do prefer the 7th. It has a great village feel..more top and bibb gourmand restaurants than 4th, 5th, 6th combined. So many things to walk to, along with excellent bus and metro. It doesn't hurt to have the ET out your window, either. It feels like home when I arrive here.

Many areas to stay in and enjoy them all...

Thanks gracejoan3 for your advice. We will sure try staying in the 7th on our next trip. My wife will be particularly happy about that as she wants to go to Bon Marche!

Sadly we are leaving the city of light tomorrow morning, for St-Remy-de-Provence.

Paris has been great. We went to see the Tour Eiffel the other night, it was a spectacle to say the least and particularly so in the EU Blue that they are doing this year.

Given we are travelling with a toddler, we have also spent a lot of time locally in the Marais, exploring its side streets, hallways etc. We will just walk around the Bastille today before coming back home to pack

I hope you enjoy the rest of your time in Paris. As you are aware, it is getting cooler but at least sunny. No matter what the weather is like, Paris is still a wonderful city.

Enjoy!

Swagman,

Have you been to St. Remy before? If not, you are in for a real treat. A favorite area of mine. I love the Alpilles. Here is a special spot for me:
http://www.riboto-de-taven.fr/

Lovely people, excellent food, beautiful grounds and can walk up Les Baux after the crowds have gone for the day..you are away from its crowds. Beautiful area to walk in.

Enjoy your visit.....Joan

Today was to be alight day for eating.

I went for my usual breakfast at Flirt'The

Cleaning people came today and I got out of their way. Had a number of errands to run and things that I wanted to do.

A bit chilly out. A scarf feels very good!

I decided to stop by Cafe Max and see what he could do for me for lunch. Told him some kind of salad sounded good to me. He brought me a delicious salad..greens, thin slices of duck, olives, tomatoes, walnuts, mushrooms, good bread, a glass of wine. What more could I ask for.

Max's wife came in..a much younger gal..very nice. He brought her over and introduced her to me. We visited a bit. They have bought the place immediately below me and are having it re-modeled..was supposed to be finished by now..but are they ever finished on time? I check on it every day.

Last night's crowd was the norm for him. Lunch is mostly politicians and lawyers. He had many bottle chilling in a large bowl filled with ice. They come in, stand at the bar and have wine, some snack goodies and carry on some "big talk" before sitting down to a table.

Max would not let me pay for my lunch...can't get much better than that!!

a bientot........Joan

Hi Joan, I am enjoying reading your posts. I would read a daily journal of your days in Paris/France if you would write it. How about a blog? They are so easy to do. (See mine at www.maggiwun.blogspot.com). That way we can all live through you vicariously!

Thanks for the link.

Yes, we have been to St-Remy, special part of the world isn't it?

We were in Provence back in May, on the other side though, in the Luberon, stayed in Bonnieux for 3 weeks. But did not get to St-Remy or Les Baux, so thought they warrant a visit before we fly out of France.
