I think I would have to say: "Which Paris are you talking about?".
I love the Paris most Fodorites talk and write about. The beautiful window displays, romantic restaurants, awesome museums, lovely parks, fascinating churches...not to mention major landmarks and walks along the Seine. The Isles. Crepes. I could go on and on.
But I'm now planning my 7th trip...a high school graduation gift for a grandchild. She is, let's say, different. Vegetarian. Very into Bohemian style, books, music, etc. She's go-go-go from the moment she wakes up. Where I've always stayed in the 6th or 7th, this time I'm aiming for the Marais or (most likely) one of the Paris Vacation apartments in Palais Royal. I figure the Palais is a place I could let her go out by herself...in the gardens...when she just has to get away from the adults. I've never gone up to Montmarte, but we'll probably go up there several times. She's smitten with it. I will probably get a tour guide, focusing on the Revolution. (She loves Les Miz).
So it just depends on which Paris you're looking for.

Kerouac, if I said where I prefer over Paris it would soon be overrun, so I'll leave you Parisians, along with those in London, Cambridge, Oxford, Amsterdam, Barcelona, Venice etc to enjoy your tourist hordes.
Not a city person.
Loacker, no great loss. Hate away. I didn't say I hate the place, just it holds no appeal. I would have to visit it to hate it. I can't hate something I don't know, unlike you.

I bet it's your own backyard, LOL. Since you have no interest in Europe's greatest cities.

We know a couple who lands in London , rents a car at the airport and
drives away to visit the British countryside. Every year.
There is no point in arguing about people's interest and taste.
As for " tourist hordes", I gladly put up with groups of people in order to see Venice,
the Coloseum, Las Meninas, the Kremlin, Hermitage, Van Gogh's self portraits,
Bruges , Sagrada Familia, Alhambra, Dachau, Prague....
..the list goes on..
Beats our background!

Sadly, I've only been seven times (plus a day-trip from London) since I retired in 1999...can't compete with some of you.
If I could afford it, I would definitely go once or twice a year to Paris...It's magical!
(We always go in May or the fall. There are still lots of tourists, but not like what I've heard regarding the summer.)

I've been to Paris several times. i've enjoyed Paris. But I can't work up much enthusiasm for going back. I could have added it to a couple of trips recently, which included other parts of France, but chose not to. London, on the other hand....
