We are heading to Norway this August for a family vacation. We are an active couple with a ten year old boy. We like hiking, biking, kayaking, photography and touring around. Museums and churches are okay in small doses - more catering to our son's interests than ours.

These are the points we are going to be traveling through. Any must see recommendations?

Trondheim

We aren't planning to spend much time in Bergen. Basically we'll fly in overnight, and then head out to Vik. We'll be spending 1-3 nights at each of the various points.

Would people recommend the glacier hike in Fjaerland?

Bergen is a fun city and a great tourist destination. Becayse you like actuvities, see if you can sign up with a group for the 7 mountain climb. Definitely go up on the Floy Banon (sorry about spelling) or funicular. When you get to the top the views of the city and harbor below are spectacular.

This might be too much to do all 7 peaks but you could do a couple. It is what the locals do and if they do all 7 they have well deserved athletic bragging rights.

The weather will be nice in August and you'll only have about 5 hours of darkness.

It's a real shame that you aren't in Trondheim in winter.

We were there in February and used Trondheim Polar Activivties which is a tiny family run husky sled farm. They have 40 dogs and take two sleds out at a time. It was an incredible and intimate experience unlike those huge husky operations in Tromso which cater for the mass market. Our 10 year old loved it.

In terms of activities, we absolutely loved the town indoor pool which has water slides, a climbing wall and a huge glass exterior wall which overlooks the fjord. It has to be one of the best views of any indoor pool we have visited, it feels as if you are swimming the the sea.

Trondheim is one of the most affluent small towns in Europe and has good quality shops and restaurants.

I'm unsure whether you have booked your accommodation or finalised your route but The Lofoten Islands aren't far up the coast and have to be in the top ten most stunning sea scapes in the world. The hikes on the islands are aren't impossible for a fit ten year old and the views are difficult to comprehend.

My DD and her family spent a day in Trondheim (they did the Norway in a Nutshell) and she said it was a charming and adorable city. They also went in the summer.

especially with a 10 year old you should stay in Bergen. Mount Fløyen would be great for him! Trondheim is also nice. And maybe, instead of traveling around (what's there in Hellesylt apart from the ferry, I wonder), maybe use Lom as a base and do some hiking and outdoor stuff there and use it to explore Sognefjord?

I agree menachem. Bergen is a lot of fun with kids. We did "Norway in a Nutshell" ... I cannot remember if it was a one day excursion but we went by bus, train and boat to various locations up a fjord. You can pick and choose and do variations of transport, and cities, with hotel accommodations (I believe) as well.

I wpuld Check them oit. They make tours so easy. I highly recommend using them. I believe they are overseen by the government of Norway?

Especially during the weekend, Fløyen is kids central. Outdoor activities are very much kids' things too, so there is always a lot available publicly that caters to that and to their parents.
