Paris in early January

There are some very good "deals" listed for 6-night stays and I'm tempted to take one. Any ideas as to what to do/see/restaurants/weather will be MUCH appreciated!

Well, I'd think most of the things you would want to see would not matter what time of year you go. I've been in December and in late January. Both are good times to go, nothing like a warm cafe when it's a bit inclement out.

I'd read the Fodor's guide to Paris and search here for itineraries, restos,etc...There are tons of ideas. Plus....without you saying what your interests are, bit hard to give you a "what to see". What do you want to see?

The good thing about travel this time of year is that it is off season..so things like hotels are cheaper, and crowds are smaller. and, if arts are your thing, the entertainement season (symphony, ballet, etc) is much fuller.

Just be careful. Often the "deals" mean a hotel that's pretty far from the city center. Do your homework and research the hotel that's offered for the great deal price.

If you do a search here, you will come up with a list of hotels that are regularly mentioned. Some have web sites. When I've looked you often see that chart of rates depending on time of year, and sometimes you get the "4 nights, 5th one free" deals that are not as common in the summer season.

and..yes, it may be cheaper to stay a bit further out. Pros and Cons: pros...cheaper, may get a bit more of a feel for non-touristy neighbourhood, metro/RER system is good so you are never really far from the centre...Cons...you may have to travel everyday to get where you want to go, you can't just walk to some of the tourist sites.

Some of the 'deals' use hotels that are less than 'divine'.

As an example, when I went in December couple of years back, stayed at Timhotel Jardin des Plantes. Very basic, but good hotel, very nice location (1 long block from Seine, around corner from Arene de Lutece, near Mouffetard market,etc...) Timhotel is a chain with many hotels in Paris.
