Paris in December
Any comments or advice from people who've been to Paris in the Winter? It would be my first trip to Europe, and I don't know if we should wait until Springtime (especially in lieu of what's happening in the political / terrorist arena....)

hello Lydia,
I've been to Paris in the spring, summer and winter......And I like the winters because most of the planes are not too full and the fare is cheap, it isn't your typical tourist season plus I don't even speak "french". Everything will be open, shops,hotels...museums. It can get cold and it will rain...but its still "Paris". I will also be going again this December. You should have a great time.
ciao
frank

Bonjour Lydia! Paris is ALWAYS worth a trip. I will be there myself again in December and I am looking forward to it a lot. I absolutey love it there during wintertime. Just bring warm clothes and an umbrella and enjoy what Paris has to offer -- there is a lot, believe me, especially if you are interested in cultural events, art exhibitions, concerts, etc.
Bon voyage and have a great stay!

Lydia,

I saw a response advising warm clothing. I would like to add something. During the winter they blast the heaters in all buildings. In public buildings like museums and restaurants you do not always have the free will to open a window for relief. I would like to suggest you carry a nice, warm coat, muffler and gloves and a small umbrella then stick to simple, blouses and knit sweaters or thin layers for your daily dress.

You can check your outerwear at museums and there is ample storage for such things in restaurants.

You might spend a good deal of time on the metro and it can be like a blast furnace down there.

I hope your trip will be worry free. I just got back from a trip there and it was the most tense city I visited. Do not stay at the Hotel Minerve. Do not wear an American flag pin on your lapel.

Another thing... the American Embassy is located between the Obilisk and the Arc, on street off the Champs Elysee sort of across from the Planetarium. You might want to avoid sitting in the park that is in between the Champs and the Embassy. We were advised to leave when we stopped to seak refuge from rain.

Hi Lydia
I've been to Paris a lot, including last December. Of course check a weather forecast before you go, but the advice above of dressing in layers is a good one. Last Dec we had steady drizzle for two of our 4.5 days, and some showers on the other days, but nothing spoils Paris for me. We had temps in the upper 40s, so a lined raincoat with a sweater underneath was fine for me. I had brought silk ski underwear as well for another layer, but I didn't need it.
Waterproof shoes/boots, and extra (dry) socks came in handy, an umbrella of course, and gloves, which can make a big difference in body warmth.
I've got a long file on Paris; if you'd like to see it, email me.

Lydia,
I agree, wear layers. I went to Paris the beginning of February, and Ursula is right, they blast that heat in the buildings. I usually wore a thin to medium turtle neck, with a black leather jacket and gloves. I was very comfortable. Don't forget your umbrella!
