Just received a Duties Bill?
I just received a bill for Customs Duty from the shipper used by the Ceramics house that shipped our Ceramics home from Italy. I'm a bit confused however, in that I thought we were allowed to bring in merchandise of approx. $600 in value each to the US, inclusive of those items we had shipped?

Can someone who has shipped home product from Europe before clarify for me why I would have to pay for this Duty? (other than "it's the law"). We were under the allowed amount of merchandise, including these shipped goods!

I would appreciate any clarification and guidance.

Correct ont he duty isue. But note that most shops deduct the VAT on items shipped directly. At least they should. The Vat is usually more than the duty and shipping combined. And while you are supposed to be able to get a VAT refund, I have not always been able to do so and most shops do not have the proper paperwork for you anyway. At least small owner operated shops.
