Latinspicy,
My nephew rented this one:
http://www.airbnb.com/rooms/31685
They do short term rentals. Internet, good location. Someone else here posted they had also known someone who stayed there. I looked at it for upcoming trip, but my dates were gone.

Paris Walks are not a bad investment. ~10 euros for 2 hrs around various neighbourhoods.
The Hop-on Hop-Off bus will take you around all of the sites, you can get off and visit, or just loop.
Also look to see when museums are free.
TO save money, I eat breakfasts at cafes, versus taking the hotel breakfast. For lunch, I may pick up a sandwich at Paul's (a chain) or some other place that has take out sandwiches. For dinner, some places offer 'menus' (not in the North America meaning of the word). These are fixed priced meals that could include a soup/salad + entree + dessert. Often there may be several at different price points. Cheaper than a la carte.
I'd also eat away from the main tourist flow...no resto on Champs Elysee, rue de Rivoli, overlooking Eiffel Tower.

ah, thanks I feel vindicated, Ackislander!
seriously latinspicy, be smart and don't do anything silly, but you will be safe in Paris...
one other tip for being safe...don't stand right by the doors on the metro...thieves like to grab and dash as the doors are about to close; keep your purse close and stand away from the doors
