The award goes to Grenier a Pain

As Jacques Pepin says, it's hard to beat bread and butter.

Like the Beaujolais Nouveau, this marketing gimmick has lost all of its attraction in France. Only about 8% of the bakers in Paris participate in the first place. I think it is great for the winner, who will probably get a 10% spike in customers for a month or two.

The only people who are really interested in the best baguette of the year are the people working in the boulangerie, which receives a yearly contract to provide bread to L'Elysee, and the people who will eat the bread during the official meals they must endure there.

I always maintain that the best baguette is the one from your local boulangerie. I think it is absurd to make a special journey.

I would make a special journey to eat their baguette. They have won before so must be good. I love the walnut bread they make in Paris best though, slathered with good French butter. Nothing better. It is an honor bestowed on bakers and that is a big deal.
