When I saw the title of this thread, I selected it immediately hoping that somehow it would deal with that tricky "bis" issue that I was never able to figure out, even with the help of Babelfish. Sure enough. And street and metro numbering info into the bargain. Is this a great forum or what?!!! Thanks.

I think it has been resolved, but it sort of means "something additional at that number". For example, the Paristoric is in and address that is American Express (I think)--16 bis ________. It's in the basement of the building.

Hi Claude , I know it is not regarding bis per se, but I think you will find useful to know that that buildings in Paris are numbered serially .with odd numbers on one side and even on the other.
On streets running parallel to the river Seine the numbers star from the up stream side or East side.
On streets running forming an angle with the Seine
it can be a right or an oblique angle the numbers rise from the river. I hope this is helpful....it has helped me in Paris.

"bis" simply means that more than one occupant is located at that address. There may be 50 occupants at an apartment building and they will all have the address 123 bis, rue de la liberation for example.
