paris

Hi fodorites. Thanks for the feedback on travel checklist. I have another question.
I have planned to go to chateau of versailles and fontainbleau during my trip to paris. I am planning to take RER C from paris city to versallies and snfc train from gare lyon station to fountainbleau. What is my concern is, after getting down at versailles R.G.how do i go to versailles palace,is it a walkable distance?,if it is not, what kind of transportation is the best to reach the chateau of versailles. If i have to walk, is it easy to locate the palace or should i carry a street map. where will the transportation(if at all i take a bus or shuttle) will drop me.These question apply to both chateau of versailles and fontainbleau.I have bought street map of paris.Since these two places are away from paris city, they are not in the map. So should i buy the street maps for these two places or will i be able to find the necessary info in the internet. Unlike paris street map, which i will be using everyday on my 1 week trip, the street map of versailles and fontainbleau will used only once during my trip.So i didnt consider buying it, before. But if you people suggest it as a essential thing,i would consider buying it. Thank you for your help.

Chateau de Versailles: take the RER to Versailles "Rive Gauche (RG)". Exit the train station, turn right and walk to end of block. Turn left, walk about 1/4 mile to the Chateau (broad leafy avenue, then huge cobble plaza, then chateau - you can see it from quite aways).

To return, walk back the way you came, go into the RER station and return to Paris..

Chateau Fontainebleu: take the train to Fontainebleau/Avon station. Exit the station, walk out front to the bus stop for 'Chateau'. There will probably be others doing the same, ask around.
The bus will pull up - the signage will say 'Chateau' or 'A' I forget. It will take about 10minutes ride through the town until you reach the stop for the chateau. The chateau sits in the middle of the town, so directly across the street from the bus stop you can see it.

If you want to confirm with the driver, be sure to preface your inquiry with "bonjour monsieur, le chateau s'il vous plait?"..

If you miss the bus stop you will know by seeing your ride pass it by! Just get off at the next one and walk back, no biggie.

To return, go to the same stop you were dropped off, the bus sign over the front window should say "Gare". If you check with the driver, say "bonjour monsieur, le gare s'il vous plait?"...
(gare is pronounced to rhyme with "war" not "fair"...)

You can print some local maps by going online to www.mappy.com and entering the town names. That will give you some idea where things are situated.

I was on a tour when at fontainebleau so can't help with directions sorry. I actually thought fontainebleau's interior was just as impressive if not more impressive than Versailles Palace .
This site might enlighten a few things for you prior to your visit

I went to the top of the eiffel tower in april with a backpack no problems
unless things have changed since then!
