The most recent issue of the National Geographic Traveler magazine (March 2001) lists 22 small hotels in Paris.
Hopefully your library will have a copy.
Also try this web site:
http://www.france-hotel-guide.com/75paccue.htm
Paris is full of little hotels. None of us knows more than just a small sample.

I assume that the "5 or 6" in the title of your brief post means that you are looking to stay in the 5th or 6th arrondissements. You can get better prices if you go a little farther out.
And some of the unrated hotels have good prices, too. You pay for the stars! That is for sure.

Karen, My daughter and I were in Paris 2 weeks ago and stayed at a good place - in fact my husband and I are going to Paris March 14 thru March 20th and we are staying in the same place. It is the Hotel Sully St-Germaine, 29-31, rue des Ecoles - only 2 blocks from Notre Dame. It is in the Quartier Latin. Fantastic location! Just 2 blocks from Metro - if you are coming in on train from CdeGalle airport you get off at the stop Maubert. The bus also goes right by the front door. When I went with my daughter our rates were $106 for 2 people with 2 twin beds - private bathroom and the price included breakfast and tax. Sweet! The hotel has a fitness room with whirlpool. Breakfast room and bar. I got those rates off hoteldiscount.com. No longer available so tried the hotel's web site and price was 150 - decided to call and I got the room for 2, including breakfast for $114. Older hotel but clean and - important to me - the staff spoke English and were all VERY nice and helpful. If you want more information, feel free to e-mail me and I will share. If not - have a wonderful time on your trip.

I find it difficult to recommend any single hotel to such a broad question, as there are hundreds in Paris, really depends on area you want to be in. One broad generalization is that you will probably find the best values in the 7th arr, at least among the close-in areas. So if you just want as cheap as possible with bathroom, you can fairly easily browse www.hotelboulevard.com looking for the cheapest two-star hotels in the 1st-8th arr. I think the cheapest hotels I know of that could suit you and are good value would be the Grand Hotel Leveque and the Hotel Turenne in the 7th arr., there are probably a few more in that general area about that cheap (500F or less for a double), there are quite a few nice two-star hotels in that area around 600F or more. If you want to stay on the Right Bank (near Louvre, etc), I think the Hotel Saint Roch in the 1st arr and Grand Hotel Jeanne d'Arc in the 4th might be good bets in the lowest price ranges.

oh sorry I completely missed or forgot the idea that you want to stay in the 5th or 6th -- well, you won't get something as cheap there, but this info has been done several times recently on this forum -- Grand Hotel des Balcons in the 6th, Familia or Minerve or College de France are cheap hotels in the 5th. YOu may need to search a while given the late date of your request.
