Is it possible to rent a car at train stations in Tuscany/Umbria?

We are planning on using mostly trains and buses during our trip to Rome, Tuscany, and the Amalfi coast. Upon our arrival in Rome, we were thinking of taking the train to Orvieto or somewhere in Tuscany and then renting a car for 2-3 days to explore the hill towns. Does anyone know of any car rental companies that rent cars at train stations in either Orvieto or Chiusi or at other train stations nearby in Tuscany?

Avis is directly across the street from the train station in Arezzo, but that may be further north than you want to go.

We're picking our rental car up in Siena and returning it in Orvieto. There is an Avis office in Orvieto, Viale 1 Maggio. Shouldn't be a long taxi ride to the train station from there.

There are several car rental agencies in the vicinity of the train station in Florence. Any car rental websight will list the city offices and the hours. Also if you call the toll free numbers and give them a list of your final choices, they will be glad to tell you how close the train station is. Since train travel is used so much in Italy, many companies have locations near the stations. In the smaller towns, the hours and car choices may be limited.

Just found out that Avis has offices in Orvieto and Chiusi, but both close around noon on Saturday, and we don't arrive until after noon. Any other ideas for car rental companies near a rail station in SE Tuscany? Arezzo and Florence are both farther north than we want to go, this time. Auto Europe said they don't have one in Orvieto.

If I'm not mistaken, Auto Europe has a rental office in Perugia.

Auto Europe has no offices anywhere in Europe. They are brokers for companies that ARE in the business of car rental. They have no cars to rent.

The train goes to the airport in Florence. Easy place to get in/out and pick up a rental car.

Heads up

Note that if you pick up your car at the airport in Florence (or anywhere else) rather than downtown, you will pay an extra 12 percent on the entire rental, which could result in big bucks. Driving out of Florence is not difficult.

Somehow, Lisa, I thought I had included this in some other answer to you. A very good resource for locating car rental locations is www.avis.com - - and click through "Rental locations".

Yes, it's only one company, but generally, where they are, others are too. And at least you know where one is this way. It doesn't mean that there aren't places with another company (but NOT Avis). But this is one of the most helpful resources for this that I have found.

In my experience, most car rental companies do close at noon or 1 p.m. on Saturday, except those at the airport. You will probably have to be a little more flexible with your plans.

Unfortunately our flight does not arrive in Rome until around noon on Saturday. This appears to preclude taking a train and renting in Tuscany or Umbria that afternoon, since the locations I've checked aren't open at that point, so it looks like we'll have to rent at Rome FCO airport upon our arrival (which we were hoping to avoid).
Thanks everybody for your help anyway!

It's pretty easy to rent at Da Vinci and get out of town without going through the hell of driving in Rome. Rome has a ring road like Paris. You'll come in about 7 o'clock and go off about noon onto A 1 toward Firenze. Just don't follow the "Via Appia Nouva". Then, you know you can return the car at Orvieto before returning to Rome. It's only if you try to drive in Rome that you're doomed.
