i second the advice for the ratp.fr site (the paris transit system). you can print out entire metro and bus maps, including the individual lines with each stop marked. plus, there's a "route finder" where you enter your starting and ending address - say, your hotel and sacre coeur - and it will tell you exactly which metro or bus (your choice) to take and how long it will take. it was invaluable in our planning as we wanted to take mostly buses, which always got us where we wanted to go with no changing.
you should have no trouble getting buses or the metro in the 7th.
have fun!

This is a "transitional" area. It has a great deal of charm in my opinion. We rented an apartment on Rue St. Maur for 2 weeks and loved the area. It's a "hip" pocket and you will find lots of things that reflect that. If it's still open, I recommend dinner at Le Bleu Homme on Jean Pierre Timbaud. It's great berber food. Cafe Charbon is here..filled with music. Astier is in this neighborhood as well also on Jean Pierre Timbaud. You will find a very reasonable and delcious discovery menu. Your metro stop is Parmentier. It is very easy to travel from this area to just about anyplace in Paris.
We only used the metro(and our feet). We felt very safe walking in the neighborhood as well. BTW, there is a very good grocery store on St. Maur called Attac or Attaque. Try the yogarts in the little glass jars.BTW..this is in the 11th.

You didn't say where on rue St. Maur you were staying, but if you look at the entire length of the street, there are quite a few nearby Metro stations. You should have no trouble getting anywhere you wish to go.
