Palermo, Sicily

We will need a hotel in Palermo for the first two nights of our April trip. Anyone have ideas for a hotel? We'd prefer to avoid chain hotels - esp of the Hilton variety. Budget will be about 100-126 euros a night. Would like a walkable area and a hotel with some local atmosphere. Thanks for any suggestions.

I stayed in an apartment during my visit to Palermo, but in walking around the city extensively, one of the most charming streets I came across was the via delle Biciclette, and noticed there is a b&b there (if you are willing to consider a b&b. It's a great location, but I don't know if the rooms and amenities suit your needs.

If that doesn't work, the only other piece of advice I will give you is that I noticed that a great many 3*/4* hotels are bunched up around the piazza Politeama, and as perfectly pleasant as it can be around there, it does feel something like a tourist gulch, and in particular the restaurants are more "tourist safe" than in some of the more atmospheric neighbohood joints in other places. If you find something around there that gets fab reviews and fits your budget, don't hesitate to take it, but be sure to get out of the neighborhood for dinner.

Sorry -- the name of the street itself is via Divisi -- but it is a pedestrianzied street full of bicycle repair shops, and so one thinks of it as the "via delle biciclette"

Here is the b&b website, with prices

Thanks...I totally get the idea of getting out of touristy areas for meals. As a NYer, I hate to get stuck for dinner around Times Sq.

This looks like a possibility. Might still want a bit more of a hotel situation so other suggestions appreciated from anyone, anywhere.

We stayed at the Hotel Joli. We preferred the rooms under the roof which were larger than the rooms on the lower floor. It is readily reachable by taking the airport bus and is within walking distance of the old center of Palermo.

The hotel in which I stayed has not gotten good reviews for some time. If I were to go to Palermo again, I would consider staying in the area around the Teatro Politeama Garibladi and / or Teatro Massimo.

We stayed at the Grand Hotel Wagner located between the old and new cities. Like the Joli, it's near Politeama and the Teatro Massimo, liked the area. It's grand name not withstanding, it was reasonably priced in comparison to some of our other stays. Easy to walk to the major sites. You can click on my name for my trip report.
