His spirit will live on for many years in all the old threads that get resucitated. He certainly communicated the sheer joy of travel.
Just last week I was considering correcting some of Palenq's inaccuracies on a topic about Rome, but I thought, "What the hell does it matter, and let it go." It must have been my better angel who suggested that to me.

I'm so sorry to hear about Pal. I always appreciated his generous advice when I posted specific questions, recently about the travel pass in Switzerland. I'll be the beneficiary of his generosity next week in fact.
RIP, Pal. You are missed.

This is such sad news. Pal was unstinted with his generous advice about train travel and if he had a bee in his bonnet about Blackpool he accepted the ribbing he got about that and his love of Corrie with good humour. He was also a party to some memorable and highly amusing exchanges with David West, now also sadly deceased, in which bonnets and paint stripper featured frequently.
He will be deeply and sadly missed by all of us here. RIP my old Pal.

Sad news, indeed. I was so hoping that Pal was recuperating somewhere reading and chuckling at these threads. He was a big part of the boards and his departure leaves a void. Yes, some people were annoyed by him, some were rude to him but as far as I can remember he seemed to live by the idea that everyone is entitled to his/her own opinion. Not everyone here is that generous, so for that I raise a glass to him.
I do hope he is pleasantly surprised by the hereafter; rest in peace, Pal. To his family, please accept my sincere condolences.

My condolences to Pal's family. He was a major character and very prolific poster on Fodor's.
Pal had a great sense of humor. This year, he pranked me by pretending to spoil Jeopardy! during the long run of champion James Holzhauer. Boy, was I mad the first time. Then it became a running joke. When I watch James on the Tournament of Champions, it just won't be the same.

I am so sad and so shocked to hear this news. Pal was helpful to me regarding train travel as he was to so many other people. Someone mentioned he was 71. Much too young to die. And a bit scary since I think many of us are around that age. I certainly am, as is my husband. My condolences to his family!
