Paestum/Capri

We are planning to spend a week on Capri early June.
For many years now, I wanted to visit Paestum. Is it possible to do a day trip from capri to Paestum/
I know that there is a train service from Naples. but I wonder if it is possible to go there by sea
Thank you

There are no boats from Capri to Paestum, and the boats between Capri and Salerno go at the wrong times for a day trip to Paestum: in the morning from Salerno to Capri and in the evening from Capri to Salerno.

You would have to take a boat to Naples and trains from there to Paestum.

Hi Ann - If you especially want to go by sea, you could do it as far as Salerno (- via Sorrento). From Salerno it would be bus (- or train) to Paestum. Time-consuming ... but feasible.

You would need to get an early ferry/hydrofoil from Capri to Sorrento.
From Sorrento there is a 09.25 hydrofoil to Salerno
(- arr. 10.50 Salerno Molo Manfredi). For details:
www.metrodelmare.com
(- service MM3)

You would not be in Paestum much before lunchtime.

Hope this helps ...

Steve

P.S. If you choose the Naples route, the 08.54 train from Napoli Centrale gets you to Paestum at 10.15.

N.B. The next train from Naples is not until 12.00!
(- arr. Paestum 13.45)

It's a 15 mins walk from Paestum station to Paestum site For return train times:

Keep in mind that the return ferries to Capri won't run late.

I would be tempted to book a tour since the transportation logistics aren't good.

Here is another thought, spend a night in Paestum. Keep your hotel on Capri or do Paestum at the end or beginning of the trip.

A couple of years ago we stayed at this fantastic B&B, Casale Giancesare in Paestum. I cannot for the life of me remember the family's name that owns it, but they are GREAT. She is this fantastic cook, that if you ask in advance, will do one of her wonderful suppers for you. The entire family gets involved. They have their own wine and olive oil.

I would do Paestum with an overnight either before or after Capri.

Hi Ann,

You could always get off Capri for a day.

For Ferry schedules Positano – Amalfi - Salerno (P.zza della Concordia):
See http://tinyurl.com/3cbhkb

Positano - Capri 09.10 - 10.00 - 11.45 - 14.20 - 15.45 - 18.00 10.5 E
Capri - Positano 11.40 - 16.25 - 17.00 - 18.40 - 19.15

You can get to Paestum, by SITA bus to Salerno via Amalfi or by ferry from Positano or Amalfi. From Salerno, there is a train to Paestum.

Enjoy your visit.

As no one has suggested this, perhaps you can ferry into a coastal town (i.e. amalfi, positano), and from there hire a driver. We stayed in Sorrento for 5 days and hired a driver for a day trip to the Amalfi coastal towns and Paestum was a must. I would never do that again as it was too much and too little time in each location. Paestum is quite a distance.

Ann,

I visited Paestum on my last trip and it was really a highlight. I wished I had more time there. I would go for the staying overnight plan.

Buon viaggio!

Ira - Where do you get your timetables from? They are not current.

Dave,
I just looked up your B&B in Paestum. I've been to Sorrento, Positano and Capri, but only by boat. I really want to visit Paestum and Amalfi on our next trip. We had planned on staying near Salerno, but your place looks lovely and sounds perfect. Did you absolutely have to have a car to get there? If not, what would be the best means of getting there, and how would you get about to visit other areas from there if you wanted to stay there longer? Would it be a good base for visiting Amalfi & Positano, or no? Thanks.

Ira - Your Positano-Capri list is several years out of date, judging by the fare of 10.5 E.

For current timetables between Capri/Amalfi Coast the most reliable link is:
http://www.capri.net/en/ship-timetable

It's updated regularly.
This year's fare is € 14.50-17.00

You might want to contact them and ask if they can pick you up at the train station. I would not want to walk up to their house.
