Hello fellow Fodorites,

I will be going to Germany (specifically in the Bavaria region: Bamberg, Fussen etc.) and Poland (Warsaw, Krakow) for 3 weeks from the last week of May to middle of June.

I have a packing question: I know the mornings/evenings will be quite chilly, so I will need to bring a jacket out with me. Do you have any recommendations for very light weight and compact windbreakers? (I want to be able to fit it into my purse). I see that temperatures can hit a low of 7 to 10 degrees during this time period. I do not want to carry around a bulky/heavy jacket with me during the afternoon when the weather gets warmer.

Lands' End last season had jackets you could fold into a pocket, but I can't vouch for them personally (did think about buying one).

The average temps for May on Wunderground.com show it to be in the sixties everyday. Where did you get these temps from?

Okay Celsius then, but still it is not cold at 65 degrees Fahrenheit.

@ michele_d -- exactly! So it seems that the OP wants to be able to wear a jacket during the night/morning lows (which Wunderground.com shows to be in the 7 - 10 degree Celsius range, if not cooler, for May/June) and then carry the jacket during the afternoon (when it is on the order of 65 degrees Fahrenheit on average). Seems a reasonable question to me!

Oh, and another less casual option: A simple jacket from Chico's Travelers line or other wrinkle-free fabric, along with the lightest weight silk or wool challis scarf you can find and a pair of silk glove liners. That's my "go-to" option if I want to be able to dress up or down. I carry the scarf and gloves in my day-bag more or less all the time.

I have one from L.L. Bean that folds into a pocket. Very handy
