Oyster Card

Is it worth getting an Oyster Card for just two full days in London. It seems like it might not be worth it, but after reading about it not sure. It's also a little complicated to understand. Am I correct in saying that you use decide on the amount of money you want and use your credit card specifying what zones you will go travel in? thanks for any help in sorting this out.

If arriving at LHR then probably yes, otherwise probably no. You can use real cash to buy one, no need for CCs.

If you decide otherwise then do get a Travelcard as paying for individual fares is EXPENSIVE.

When I landed at Gatwick, took Gatwick express to Victoria Stn. When you enter the station there is a transportation info office right across from you. The card costs £3. I loaded it up with £40 for six days, and left with £9 at the end. The staff will help you decide what to get. They told me £5-6 a day.

The furthest I went from central london was Hampstead. I used it everyday, but I'm also a walker.

...BTW I believe they have raised the required refundable deposit for an oyster card to 5 quid...for 2 full days it's not going to back a big difference one way or the other...coming into Heathrow as long as it is past 0930, you buy a one day zone 1-6 travelcard and you're done. If the next day is a weekday and it's after 0930 and assumig yu're staying in Central London, you buy a zone 1 & 2 travelcard...finished. You might save a few pennies by buying an oyster card and then refunding the 5 quid but not enough to make a big difference.

Also don't put too much money on it if you think you won't use it as we couldn't get our balance refunded on leaving the UK as it was over £10. If you put a smaller amount on it initially, then you can slowly add £5 or more as you need it.

I should add that at the station at Heathrow they said if the card was registered then I could get the money back but the registration form was very long and we had a flight to catch. We later gave the card to a friend to use.
