Overnight stop between Rome and Cinqueterre?

We're flying into Rome in the early am and have 4 days and 3 nts to spend before our stay in Umbria. I thought about traveling up the coast from FCO and stopping for lunch in Porta Ercole then spending one night in San Gimignano before spending 2 nights in or near the CT. We're looking for charming accomodations, with nice views. What do you think of the route? Is there a better place to spend the night? We stayed in Radda and saw Sienna and Castellina on our last trip.

I like it--assuming you are driving.
I would stay near Volterra, not far off the road and as nice as San Gim., and then 2 nites in Portovenere.

Thanks, Bob and yes we will be driving. Do you have any suggestions for places to stay in Volterra?

Thanks Pawleys. Friends of mine spent a week in Cinqueterre region last year and raved about it. I'm also thinking about flying into Rome then driving there.

Thanks for the suggestions, Bob I'll check them out. Yes, I am from P.I. and still spend the summers here.
