I called Alitalia and they disavowed any knowledge of this. What were the magic words to get them to find the fare?

Just got 'em for February on Orbitz. Bit of a struggle, but finally got to liftoff.

Is somebody at Alitalia losing their job behind this or what?

Gardyloo --

I found the airfare on Orbitz for many dates, but wanted to know whether you're spending all of your time in Cyprus OR if you found a way to do Cyprus briefly and spend the bulk of time in Italy. I can't seem to grab the same deal on a multi-city deal.

There are over 34 pages of posts on flyertalk, DRJ... at http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/showt...ge=1&pp=15

I just think it takes luck and persistence.

I tried about an hour later for two more seats and told the dates were sold out. (or is the fare gone?)

I think we will primarily spend the time on Cyprus. Might look into a 2-3 day excursion to Athens or elsewhere in the vicinity. I know nothing about Cyprus. When else am I going to get there. It seems like there must be white towns or something like them there. Is Larnaca Greek or Turk? Need some crash geography studying.

As for Beantown-YYZ... dey got's roads, don't dey? Sheez, how bad could the Greyhound be?

The fare rules allow limited changes without triggering the penalty. If we can engineer a shorter time in Cyprus and a longer time in Rome, we will. Otherwise, we'll probably look for a cheap flight to Tel Aviv from Cyprus (lots of flights) and nest an Israel-visit-the-family week between the long flights. I've had to do all this in something of a hurry today without proper consultation with my traveling companion who only knows that she can't schedule any business meetings for those days, and that "something is afoot" involving Toronto and the eastern Med.

Maybe there's a barefoot cruise or something that we can latch onto. It's been a busy morning and my co-workers are wondering what-the-h3ll-is-going-on in my office. Too many giggles.

Our itinerary is YYZ-JFK-FCO-LCA-FCO-JFK-YYZ, by the way, with the N. America and transatlantic legs all on Delta, not Alitalia. More heartbreak for our friends from Atlanta.

We'll need to get to Toronto too, somehow.

I just checked orbitz for October 12th through the 17th. I didn't use the multi-city function, just round trip from Toronto to Cyprus. It was first giving me a rate of $185, all taxes included, but once I clicked to select it I got a message saying that the rate was no longer available, but the lowest possible rate is still only $373 for business class tickets for TWO! Wow...I am so tempted to purchase!

Sorry, I meant to say that the original price was $33 plus taxes for a total of $185. The price went up to $60 plus taxes, which is now the total of $373.40. Its Toronto-Milan-Cyprus-Milan-Toronto.

Woohoo! I just got two tickets! We are leaving in February and going on the weekend before Valentine's day. It will only be a 3 night trip, as we are preparing to purchase a new house around that time and we will be taking a 2 week trip to Europe later on that year, but I am thrilled! Our total came to just over $400 for two tickets and the Fed Ex fee to mail the tickets to us at home. Now I guess I need to do my own Cyprus research because I know little about it.

Thanks AA so much for posting this!!

As I said and if you look at my itn above, Cyprus is an afterthough.

12/5 - YYZ-JFK-FCO
5 nights in Rome
12/11 - FCO-LCA
1 night in Cyprus - unavoidable
12/12 - LCA-MXP
1 night in Milan just before Christmas with great friends and my godchild
12/13 - MXP-YYZ

So, as you can see Rome or Milan stops were easily doable and Cyprus as an afterthought and treated as a connection only.

I've tried some dates, and I've gotten the low fare to appear on the first screen, but not when I click through (on Cheaptickets and Orbitz). I'm not sure I'd buy a winter ticket even at this low price. It typically costs about $500-600 CAD to get from Vancouver to Toronto for me. But business class would be nice. And summer dates would be great.

Also, unless you are leaving in couple of months, hold ff on an tickets to Toronto. Register with all your favorite airlines/travel sites for that route and keep your eyes/ears open.

Righ now AA wants $400 for TPA-YYZ, but I know that by Sep. or Oct. there will be some fares ~$250 available for December. I'm pretty sure that will be true with just about any airline.

Looks like Cyprus doesn't even know what will hit them. They will get bunch of Canadians and Americans showing up at the weirdest times of the year for the shortest stay or for their full vacations.

Looks like Alitalia has shut down all Cyprus flights using the internet. Error came up and said to call the airline direct. They finally caught on?

Same here, WillTravel. I haven't found anything below $870 for economy and $1700 for biz.

Alitalia appears to have pulled the fare sometime around 1 - 1:30 pm Eastern time.

Now we will see what Alitalia, Delta, Orbitz and all the other players do about it. A lot of flights on Alitalia and Delta between Toronto and New York, and Rome and Milan, appear to be very full in business class between now and the end of the year.

These things happen several times a year, and in general the airlines can't do much about it. Last year American Airlines inadvertently had a fare between Chicago/Dallas and Acapulco of exactly $0.00 plus tax. They honored it.

Not a good evening at Alitalia's headquarters.
