ostia antica when the museum is closed??

Hi there- We're heading out to Rome next week and had sorta slotted a monday as our day to go explore Ostia Antica. I just read that the museum part is closed on Mondays. In anyone's opinion, is that any great loss? Will whatever guides or books I might need still be available to us? Thanks for the help.

Hi Lucy - The whole site of Ostia Antica is closed on Mondays:

You'll need to change your plans ...

The museum is nice, but no huge loss if you don't go to it.
However, I think that a good portion of the diggings are also closed on Mondays.

thanks for the answers. i had read in one place that it was closed on mondays, but then another guidebook said it was "open daily" except museum closed on mondays. then i did find that website, steve, that you referred me to but since it was in italian it didn't help to enlighten me. but if you two are both positive that the whole place is closed on mondays then you're right, i need to do some rearranging. bummer. it fit into my week so nicely on monday....

I do believe that you can see some things on Monday, but the primary excavation area is closed.
If memory serves me right, you will only be in Rome for 2 1/2 days.
You'll have much to see without day trips.
Enjoy Rome and have a great trip.

jabez- thanks for responding. actually we will be in rome 6days. we may or may not be in the mood for a little day trip but i just wanted to arrange things so that the option was available to us. and luckily i was able to do just that.
my hubby and i have been addicted to the HBO series "Rome" and the idea of seeing the ruins of a Roman town is very intriguing to us.

lucybell, a couple years ago we specifically planned Ostia Antica for Monday, because one guide book even mentioned it was not only open daily, but that because the "uninspired museum" was closed, it was a good day to go and would be less busy. So we were shocked to get there and discover the entire place closed. The gates were fully locked and you could not enter -- period. Where that guidebook got their information I have no idea!

But for what it's worth, I did agree that the museum was kind of "uninspired". Loved the excavations though.
