Oslo to Stockholm in 3 days

Any suggestions for stopping places along the road from Oslo to Stockholm? We are renting a car and have 3 days. Several people have suggested stopping in Karlstad, then Mariefred before reaching Stockholm.

In general, is this trip worthwhile by car at all? I've read several posts that say it's underwhelming. Please advise. Many thanks, Alma

If this is part of a larger Norway/Sweden trip, it is definitely not going to be a high point of your journey.

I expect you will have to pay quite a lot to be able to do this drive as a one-way rental.

Unless you have already toured Norway, I think you should spend those three days paying a quick visit to the Norwegian west coast to see the fjords.

You could for instance drive this route: Oslo, Eidfjord, Ulvik, Flåm, Aurland, Luster, Øvre Årdal and back to Oslo. Doing this journey you'd get to see both the Norwegian west coast fjords and Norwegian mountains.

Then spend the money you saved on not doing a one-way rental to fly on the low cost airline Norwegian from Oslo to Stockholm.

I have done the other way around-- drove from Stockholm to Oslo and it is kind of (very!) boring. My advice is that you train in between and use the time saved for added sightseeing either in Stockholm or Oslo (around Norway!). We rented (a hybrid) with Hertz and the drop-off fee was not a lot IF returning to Oslo Airport. Our route once in oslo took thru Geilo-Handargevidda National Park to Bergen- Flam- Vik-Undredal- Borgund- back to Oslo (our trip theme was fjords and Stave churches). Loved every second. The hybrid was the perfct car to do this trek!

Alma, I will respectfully disagree that the trip isn't worthwhile, although if it's your only taste of rural Scandinavia, (a) it's not especially rural, and (b) there are plenty of lovelier areas in both Sweden (Kalmar, Dalarna, Gotland) and Norway (all of the coast, the Bergen to Oslo drive). Although there are many more scenic areas, the drive from Oslo to Stockholm is pleasant.

Your stopping points are good ones, especially Mariefred, which is worth wandering about for at least half a day. The Swedish National Portrait Gallery is in Gripsholm Castle in Mariefred, and Gripsholm Vardshus, is just across the lake from the castle. It's Sweden's oldest continuously operating inn, and it is a delightful place to stay. We travel to Scandinavia often and have spent a couple of nights at Gripsholm Vardshus at the start or end of several of our trips. In Karlstad the Hotel Bilan is built into what was once the old jail. That was an interesting experience, and despite the heritage, a comfortable hotel. If you drive the route, it's worth a stop to see the castle in Orebro, which is on your route.

I think your only hang-up will be the drop-off charge, which we avoided because when we drove this route (which we've done twice), it was after some other travels in Scandinavia, and we had originally picked up our car in Stockholm.

Take the train to the fjords, do Norway in a Nutshell or some variant, and then fly cheaply Bergen to Stockholm.
