Orvietto car pick up - interested in scenic trip to Montepulciano

Next month we will be arriving in Orvietto (late morning on a Monday) to pick up our rental car. We aren't due at our apartment in Montepulciano until late afternoon so would like to do a little poking around the area in between (or fairly near) the two. (We do plan to spend an hour or so in Orvietto itself first.)

Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thank you.

I would get the car first since you will have luggage. Then drive up the hill into town and park in the big lot a block behind the Duomo. PLan on 3 hours in Orvieto to inclue lunch. By now it is about 15:00 and time to hit the road. Be sure you have very good directions to your apt.--it can be tricky.

The rental car companies close between 12:30 or 1:00 and 3:30 or 4:00. What time are you arriving?

I've stayed in Orvieto several times. It deserves more than an hour if you haven't been. A bit south is Civita di Bagnoregio.

Also nearby Bagnoregio is Lake Bolsena.

You could head west from Orvieto to Sorano and Pitigliano.

www.viamichelin.com allows you to plug in an itinerary with options, including what it would recommend as a scenic route.

Thanks all for your thoughts. We hope to arrive in Orvieto by 11:00 depending on what train we take from Rome.
Bob, we are staying where you have...at Politain Apartments.

Great!
Giacomo is a jewel. Plot his directions on a map before you arrive.
