Orvieto to Fiumicino

Hi fellow travelers,
I'm finalizing our month's travel within Italy, Sept 6-Oct 6. We're going to be in Orvieto on the 5th of October flying out of Leonardo da Vinci airport on the 6th. Thus, we have planned to stay at a B&B in Fiumicino on the evening of the 5th, but I am unable to find train transportation to Fiumicino. Any thoughts? Suggestions?

Robert

Take the train to Rome, then switch to the train to Fiumicino. It would be more fun to spend the night in Rome, then take the train in the morning. Unless your flight is very, very early.

the cheapest way and perhaps quickest is to take a train from Orvieto to Rome's Tiburtina station and then tranfser to a regional train that terminates at the airport - negates backtracking into Termini - a much larger station and then finding the right track for the airport train out of zillions

check www.trenitalia.com for schedules - there is no need on those regional trains to book in advance as they do not take reservations and you can always board.Probably two hours max Orvieto to the airport.

I can't understand whyn you can't find a train. Note, though, that if you type "fiumicino" as your destination, you'll be told about a station in the suburb of that name, rather than FCO airport. You have to type "aeroporto Fiumicino" or (I THINK) "Fiumica"

It's normally unimportant whether you change at Tiburtina or Termini: only a paint-sodden Michiganian could fail to find the LDV "Express" platform at Termini. But the earliest arrival changing at Tiburtina is 0703 if you leave Orvieto at 0505. There's no same-day arrival from Orvieto before 0905 if you change at Termini.

Incomprehensibly, the earliest train from Termini is 0622, arriving 0653. If you're catching an early plane and you want to stay in Rome the night before, you'll need a taxi.

If you take the Termini route then it involves an IC train and thus a mandatory train-specific reservation but if you take the Regional trains via Tiburtina with a ticket you can hop on any of these trains without formality - just show up

With the IC train via Termini - usually NO faster but a whole lot more expensive - a lot more because not only do IC trains cost a lot more but so does the first-class only Leonardo Express you have to take from Termini to the airport.

You'll save perhaps $15-20 p.p. by going via Tiburtina and get there just as quick and not have to walk miles in Termini perhaps to connect. tiburtina is a much smaller station.

so the two routes involve very different types of trains and ticketing.

There is no train to Fiumicino town; there is a bus (SITbusshuttle) from Roma Termini. There are also buses from Lido di Ostia (train to Roma Ostiense, train to Lido di Ostia)and to Fiumicino airport, but the reasonable way to get from the town to the airport is by taxi.

The earliest train from Roma Tiburtina (stopping at Ostiense and Trastevere) is at 5:05. The first Leonardo Express from Roma Termini is at 5:52.

Thanks so very much; after reading all of your responses, we've chosen to go back to Rome for our last evening, and have booked an early morning limo service to the airport for our flight. All comments are greatly appreciated.

Robert smart decision IMO - train strikes, though often announced in advance, can always pop up in Italy, stranding you in Orvieto as it is also hard to get car transport that others want as well in such situations

I always advise being in your departure city the day before your flight
