I have just started to search for an agriturismo or locanda to the east of Orvieto, as a base for 3 - 4 days to drive around the region - before moving down and across to Abruzzo and then Molise.

Interesting wine and / or food experiences, beautiful scenery and interesting people are hopefully waiting there.

Has anyone had great / memorable experiences of a stay there ?

Never stayed here, but this organic olive oil producer in the Sagrantino wine country has a panoramic position in a central position for typical sightseeing. In addition to apartments and rooms, where the decor is plain and basic, it has a restaurant on site

If you preferred an upscale county house with a restaurant to a working farm, then Villa Selva is in an equally nice position

I seem to recall that you are traveling in August, and if you will be in Umbria on a weekend, something to consider is whether a countryside lodging with a restaurant might be hosting a wedding. The way to avoid that would be to stay in a town. There are often nice apartments with views as the edges of hilltowns.

I have not stayed at an agriturismo to the east of Oriveto, but would highly recommend Locanda Rosati, which is about 7km west of Oriveto. We had the pleasure of staying at the Locanda in late September 2012 and we had a wonderful visit. The rooms are very simple (small animal theme carvings), but have all the comforts you will need.

Guests gather for wine with the host in the library and then proceed into the vaulted dinning table - simple rustic food and lots of wine followed by limoncello and grappa.
I believe there were about 15-18 guests each night for dinner and hailed from near and far -Rome, Finland, Canada, Australia, Spain and several of us for the US.

We took a long look at Locanda Rosati which is very nice, but now a bit far away from the direction we are heading. We will go there on a future visit and also to places like Scansano.

Corbezzolo looks interesting with a prominent position but, maybe a long way in and out by road possibly from where we want to be.

We have now decided to take the train to Chiusi rather than Orvieto to start our journey. Reason is that rental cars are a problem out of Orvieto but readily available from Chiusi which has proved to be a better point to pick up and drop off at the end of our 11 days through Abruzzo and Molise to follow.

Avis are not in Orvieto any more so it seems and Hertz do not have much on offer in Orvieto whereas they all seem to be in Chiusi with some good deals.

So the focus is now in the hills around the Marsciano/Todi region. On on to find the right place
