We are planning to arrive in Orvieto by train from Sorrento, then stay a night, picking up rental car in Orvieto the next day to contnue on our travels. We are looking for a hotel with easy access from the train station. Not sure yet where the car rental is. Is Orvieto a hill town with the historic area accessed by funicular? Is the funicular near the train station? Any hotel recommendations would be appreciated.

The funicular is about 10 steps from the train station. You can't miss it! You get on the funicular, and in 10 minutes you're in Orvieto. Everything is within walking distance -- it's a very tiny town.

We have visited Orvieto several times, and always love being there. Last year we stayed at the Hotel Duomo, which we really liked -- especially at night, when from our room we could look out the window and practically touch that magical duomo!

Lucie has good info here but failed to mention that the walk to the Duomo is about :10 from the funicular. However, a bus can take you there and is included.

bobthenavigator, thanks, I have sighted the hotel duomo on the map. looks good position. Hotel corso, closer to funicular but maybe not as good position once there.Anyone know Hotel Corso?

My wife and I stayed at Hotel Corso in Feb 2003. We thought the hotel was perfectly fine. It wasn't anything special, but was good for the night we were there. (FYI, we paid EUR 70 without breakfast, but that was off season.) Personally, I wouldn't worry too much about location as Orvieto is very small (as long as your "on the hill&quot.

Our trip was very similar to yours (this part of it anyway) - we took a train from Salerno to Orvieto, spent one night, picked up a rental car the next morning, and drove into Tuscany.

We were very impressed with how easy it is to get to the center of Orvieto from the train. We stepped right from the train to the funicular, and as soon as we got off the funicular, a little bus was waiting that dropped us off right in front of the Duomo. I think the funicular was only 1 euro & the bus was included, could be wrong tho.

Agree with Paul, once you are in the center, any hotel in Orvieto will be convenient.

The hard part will be leaving Orvieto after such a short stay.

Paul, LAwoman- Thanks yes I think just enjoy as it is a short stay and all looks good.Just researched a walking tour of the town,looks wonderful.I am getting so much out of just the rearching.I wish I had studied history. Thanks again.
