Opinions on this Paris Apt Please

Can anyone give me a quick opinion on the location of this apartment?

http://www.clickappart.com/paris-loc...tail.php?id=25

It's a really good deal and I wonder if I'm missing something. FYI- I'm traveling with my best girlfriend for her 40th birthday and will be there from May 17-23.

Thanks so much for this, and all the other wonderful advice!

It's a very good location and the Rennes metro station is nearby.

I've stayed in the 6th, almost annually, since 1981. I love the 6th. I however stay, in the area, closer to Blvd.St.Germain...plus or minus 2 blocks, north or south.

But, the area down by Rennes metro is fine. I walk rue Rennes a lot as it's lined with stores.

That's the south end of the 6th. I stayed near there once, back in the late 70s I think it was. Plus, you'll be near the Luxembourg Gardens which are lovely. So, if the price is right, then go for it. You definitely won't be disappointed in the area. Happy Travels!

"an open en-suite bathroom with shower"

It appears to me that the folding screen is the bathroom door. Whoever sleeps in the living room will need to walk through the bedroom to use the bathroom. It's a great location and an excellent price.

Cameron made a good point - also, when I see 'artistic' photos of the apartment, I wonder what they are hiding. There are no good views of the entire layout or floorplan. Is that tan bed on the floor the sofa also ? (since it has pillows?) I would also be concerned about the bathroom. It might be fine to share with a spouse, but not so sure about a friend. Like that it has a small balcony going for it -

what about this one ?

there are lots of others on vacationinparis.com which I know many have happily used.

I agree about the "open" bathroom. I like privacy, especially in a small space. The bed in the bedroom does look like a mattress on the floor.

Except for the desk and the outside table, I don't see anyplace for dining.

The terrace is the best part.

Surfmom- That one was available as of last week, but it's in the 1st rather than the 6th. From what I've read on this board, most people have strong feelings for the 6th.

Other opinions??

shoegal, we actually loved staying in the 1st. The 6th has more street atmosphere, but I love the 1st for convenience. We stayed near Palais Royal and loved it! We were 2 blocks from Monoprix for grocery shopping and close to the Louvre and Seine. I was traveling with small kids at the time and we would put them to bed and I would go out at 8pm and shoot photos as the sun was setting. I have some amazing pictures of the sun setting on the Pyramid at the Louvre.

www.pbase.com/jsemmer (look at the sunset tab)

That was just an example of something that work better. I think vacationinparis also has ones in the 6th ? One priority for me would be a washer/dryer. That way you can carry on a bag and take less clothes...

yes, there are devotees of the 6th, though I am not among them. In truth, Paris is not that large a place so as long as you are in a somewhat central location near a metro getting around is not that big an issue. I generally prefer the right bank, have not stayed on the left in years. In a broad sense, think of the left bank as NYC Upper East or West Side and the right bank as Chelsea or the Village.

As for the place you asked about, I, too, would be concerned about he bathroom arrangement. A week in a small space taxes the best of relationships and I would want at least a bathroom where I could close the door. Vacation in Paris gets lots of good reviews here (including from me) and you might also have a look at www.homeaway.com or their affiliate, www.holiday-rentals.co.uk/

"right bank as Chelsea or the Village."

Right banks includes 14 arrondissements.
I don't think 16th and 18th have the same feel!

It looks really small. I also hesitate because of the bathroom, and the uncomfortable looking sofa in the salon. You'll want to have some down time and you'll want a comfortable sofa or chair to relax in.

If you would like to stay in that area, I would suggest that you check out www.vrbo.com. I've had good luck on that site. The apartments are listed by arrondissement so it will be very easy for you to search the 6th.

My rule of thumb is that apartments are always smaller than they appear on line!

There are only a few people on Fodors that have strong feelings for the 6th, as far as I've noticed, so maybe you noticed that. I mean, if you are implying people think that is the only possible place to stay in Paris, I think there are only a couple people on Fodors who feel that way. I'm sure you would like it, but I wouldn't choose an apt. anywhere in the 6th merely because it was in the 6th as you think that is the best place to stay in Paris. I don't usually stay on the Right Bank (although I do like the 9th as a place to stay, and have a couple times), but I don't stay in the 6th, either, as I don't like it that much.

That's a decent location, as it isn't on a main street, which I wouldn't like. I think St Placide metro would be about the same distance as Rennes, so that' two lines that are close. The apt. looks okay for one person, but I wouldn't stay there with a friend due to the bathroom and the fact that one person will get stuck with the single sofabed, which could be uncomfortable. It would be nice to be near the park.

Hi shoegal,
I like the second apartment much better than the first you are considering. Like others here, I am neither enamored nor disgusted with the 6th. It's nice but far from the only place to stay in Paris. Still, the one on Cherche Midi looks good. They give the address, so you can go to Google and take a virtual walk around the neighborhood if you like. I'd stay there myself.

Christina- where do you stay, if not the 6th or Right Bank?

Good points on all accounts re: the apartment. We certainly don't need luxury and don't intend to cook, but a week in that place might be bad. Here are some preferences- #1- neighborhood that feels like Paris, as this is our first trip and could be the only one for many years; #2- would love to be able to walk to some sights; #3- close to a Metro stop

What is everyone's opinion on the Marais area? I've read mixed reviews. Here's an apartment that's available

http://haveninparis.com/rental/pasdelamule.php

As always, I'm incredibly grateful for the help.

Wow, that Haven in Paris place looks great. I like the Marais and do tend to stay near there. That area will not be quiet/peaceful if that's a concern, but it's certainly central. I arrive the day you leave and am staying about a block away from there. I wish I had seen this place before I booked because it's beautiful. Also, how very convenient to have a Mac and internet in the apartment while you're there.

Okay, I need to stop dreaming and clean my house.

I'd take the Haven in Paris if you want to be in the thick of things or the Cherche Midi if you want to be someplace a little less thronged (although it will still be somewhat thronged). Both are nice locations for a first-time visit.

I like both of the new apartments much better, with the edge going to the haveninparis apartment. Both of the apartments are convenient but the Place de Vosges unit has more interesting things right outside your door. You're also right near the #1 metro line, which can take you most places of interest.

As Leely says it comes with it's own Mac and internet which is very convenient. It also has a washer and separate dryer, which is not that common in my experience. Usually it's the washer/dryer combined.

I agree with surfmom. We loved staying in the 1st near the Palais Royal. It was more of a neighborhood than I thought it would be. We could walk through the Louvre courtyard and be at the Seine in 10 minutes--15 minutes to walk over to the 6th. Last time we stayed in the 7th, not too too far from the Cherche Midi apartment. Next time we'll undoubtedly try a new area to explore.

It's easy to walk or ride the Metro from one arrondisement to another, there are bakeries and interesting small shops everywhere, so don't feel you have to be in one specific place to experience Paris.

Since you've selected that apartment, to think about, then I assumed that you have decided that the layout is fine for you. And since your specific question was regarding the "location" of the apartment, I thus commented on the "location" and not the layout.

And as for previous comments, of course the 6th isn't the only place to stay in Paris. That sort of goes without saying. But, since you have selected an apartment in that area, then I thought it would be helpful to fill you in on the area. Happy Travels!
