How about Sorrento? My recommendation is the Hotel Aminta for a week. Fabulous views and if all you want to do is hang by the pool and look at the views you can. Or you can show in town, take the boat over to Capri, visit the towns on the Amalfi coast (by city bus if you want the frugal version or tour if you want to spend money), prowl around the ruins of Pompeii.

In my experience the least pleasant thing about travelling alone is eating alone. At the Aminta you can even have your meals brought to you on the deck where there is that, did I mention - FABULOUS view!

The other good alone travelling place is London... but that's another story.

Why are some of you jumping on Nancy? This trip planning and asking for advice is obviously theraputic for her. I don't feel she's obsessing on her situation. After all, it's still a fairly new thing.
Nancy, there are quite a few Fodorites who sympathize and don't mind sharing their advice!

Huh, what? What part didn't you get?
The Dr. Phil part? It was a way to lighten up what I wrote, skip that part.
Katherine,
thanks for the suggestion.
This vacation was spent in Rome, and then in Formia, about an hr. north of Naples, on the beach.
Loved both areas, and will be returning that way for the big 50 trip.
this time, I am looking for something a bit different as far as scenary
(oops, will the spelling police get me?)
But, thanks anyway, cause now I have another place to add to my list for the future!

Jean,
Thanks, I know
