Opening dates for Christmas markets

Hello,

I've done a bit of searching for an answer for this, but forgive me if I've missed it! I'm already thinking of a trip to Munich in 2019, and am hoping to visit christmas markets. However, I am only able to go the last week of November, landing 23rd, leaving 30th. It seems that many markets open on Dec. 1, or follow the dates of Advent (again, Dec. 1 in 2019), but some others open earlier. Is it reasonable to believe that I would have a good chance of finding some open markets during that week, or would it be better to plan on a place like Vienna, where I know the markets will be in full swing?

Thank you for any insight you might have!

I'm no expert, but all the German Christmas markets I know of start at the end of November, not Dec. 1st. At least the main ones in bigger cities (Munich, Dresden, Dusseldorf, Regensberg, etc). Not necessarily 11/23 or 24th, though, although some open that early. Munich is usually around the 27th, I think, at least most of them (I know they have more than one).

Here is a list from this year, there are only a few that don't begin until Advent.

I have been to Austria, Germany and Switzerland a few times now at the last week of November. Each time, the major markets have started. You shouldn't have a problem with your dates.

Since you are going to Munich it is very easy to get to Salzburg, Austria. I've gone as a day trip and for a few days. The main market there is beneath the Fortress and I found that market to be just as nice as the main one in Munich. Augsburg isn't far away either and I enjoyed that Market as well. I use this website when planning on what markets to see in Bavaria/Germany German Christmas Markets from A to Z. You can filter by the region and it tells you all the main market dates when posted and some information about them.

Have fun planning as I just love Christmas markets in Europe. They truly put me in a pre Christmas mood.
