Hi Denise,

Your post is a dream that many people have. But if you are serious about spending a year in Europe, I'd suggest that you really look into whether it's possible for you to obtain a long-stay visa. Every country has different requirements and getting one is a very complicated (it may be frustrating and expensive) process. You may have to show your bank statements and credit cards to prove that you're financially capable of living in that country without an income. Or, if you want to work in that country, you must be sponsored by a local company that is willing to take care of your work visa -- and that's very difficult at this time because of the crisis.

Please think carefully and consult the embassies of the countries you are interested in to find out what the requirements are for a visa application. Your application may not be approved even if you have all the documents in place.

It is not a good idea to deliberately overstay your 90-day limit in the Schengen zone. I know for a fact that in the Czech Republic the foreign police randomly stops people at the metro stations to check their passports to make sure they are legally living there.

I also forgot to mention that you must purchase health insurance coverage in advance for the entire period of stay in the European country that you will be living in.

So, if you plan to live in the Czech Republic for a year, you must pay for health insurance for one year in advance.

If you plan on working during your year in Europe, you must also contribute to the social security taxes of the country as well as file taxes, regardless of what your job is or how much you make.

Thank you nancicita. I would definitely be prepared with respect to a long stay visa, and understand the Schengen rules, have some money tucked away to ensure that we are financially capable and as Canadians while we do have universal health care coverage would be have health coverage as part of our travel insurance.

We been to Europe for upwards of a month, but as tourists. As a traveller I would love to linger at the Uffuzzi then take a leisurely lunch across the Arno. Walk home after a Flamenco performance in Seville without something to rush off to the next day other than a Spanish class, take a picnic to a rocky outcrop in Dubrovnik, those moments that will last a lifetime. Just to live the unhurried life for one year.

On my return trip home last year I overheard a woman was telling a colleague that she had spent 5 weeks in Montepulicano staring over the Tuscan countryside, eating great food, wandering from small town to small town and wished she had 5 more weeks. Sigh. I felt her pain.
