One-way vs Return Ticketing
Can anyone enlighten me to the pricing of one way tickets, signifantly higher in several scenarios I've reviewed. Are they're any penalties if you miss the return flight other than additional fees if you rearrange the booking. Sophie

Wow! That's an interesting question. I'd bet you'd have to check with the airline. There are so many different classes of tickets with different prices and different restrictions for the same flight. You might tell a ticket agent over the phone what your needs are and see what they suggest. Generally, the least restrictive the ticket, the more costly.

You probably know this, but you can generally split a round trip ticket, flying into one city and out of another, for 1/2 price on each round trip ticket. Don't know if that helps your situation, though.

Sarah,
I looked at doing an open jaw as you say. Is the 1/2 price a voice of experience or just a guess? Often I was quoted higher than average price. Yes, I tried it through two different agents.
I ended up getting a good price on RT
and I'll go from there. I'll enjoy myself, just getting across the pond is the first step. S

Sophie

Experience. I've split round trips several times and have always gotten 1/2 of each round trip fare of each specific leg. (I haven't done this for a few years, I must admit.) However, every flight has different fares available, and they vary by the minute, so by shifting a few hours, or sometimes days, the round trip fare is different, so the quoted price will be different depending on which exact flights you are going on and when you call. (and sometimes,we've found differences in fares between ticket agents...wait a few minutes, call back, and the low fare will be different. It could be coming up different on the computer, as different priced seats could be available by the minute.)

Have a wonderful time!

I also have the experience of several trips where the open-jaw was indeed priced exactly the sum of half of each RT, there was no extra charge whatsoever for it not being in and out of the same city (from US to Europe). I've never paid a penalty for open jaw ticketing. I don't use a travel agent, though, I do it myself. The only thing I've noticed is that consolidators often won't sell anything but RT so if those are the kind of tickets you're getting, maybe that's why.

I think she's talking about a flight once she's in France. If you want to go from Paris to Nice but you don't want the return flight of Nice to Paris, can you just buy the round trip ticket that's cheaper and not show up for the return flight? The one way tickets all seem to be so much more expensive.
