One-way or Round-trip Ticket to Rome

I have a question about a one-way fare. This is my first post on this forum. I’ve been here silently for a couple of years – many thanks for the great help I’ve gotten. I have searched about this question, but I am still not sure.

We are taking a cruise from Rome to Miami. One-way fare on United from Washington to Rome is more than $2000 while round-trip is closer to $800. If we buy the round-trip ticket on United, but only use the first half, will United do anything to us – like bill us for the difference? Will it affect our one-way ticket on American to go from Miami back to Washington?

Thanks for your help.

No it will not. American and United are not related in anyway

Check if your cruise line has an arrangement with any airline for just this situation.

Good suggestion. This is our first time making cruise arrangements. We've been independent travelers for 30 years.
