One night on Lac Leman/Lake Geneva
I'm helping friends put together a trip that includes Stages 9 and 10 of the 2012 Tour de France. There is a rest day between the two stages, both of which are close to Lake Geneva and they'd like to stay in a town on the lake the night before Stage 10.
Which town do you recommend they stay for picturesque views of the lake? They are two active couples in their 50s-60s who will have a car. They will have about a day and a half to explore the area.

We spent most of a day visiting the towns/cities on the south side of Lake Geneve in about '09. We thought Meillerie, Evian les Bains, and Thonon les Bains were quite depressing and "past their prime". They may have been interesting 130 years ago - but not now. Quite depressing, actually.
We spent the night in Yvoire & loved it - during the morning & evening when all the day-trippers were gone. Great views, interesting port, and the old town was fun to wander through. We had a large ocean view room at Du Port, which has a nice restaurant which was quite popular (was a Michelin 1 star not long ago). We had both lunch & dinner at the restaurant.
We did not visit Vevey or Montreux.

Sorry that Stu found Evian quite depressing...I actually enjoyed some restaurants, the weekly market, the town hall, etc. Guessing that he didn't get to see some of the great sites in town.
I did do a day trip to Yvoire from Evian and it was lovely but very, very quiet. This was late Sept-early Oct (2010). Make sure you have lunch or dinner within their limited timeframes. I was turned away from a number of restaurants at about 1:30pm.

On Swiss side and since you will be driving :

4* hotel with a magnificent view of the lake - lavaux vineyard (UNESCO's World Heritage) from the "corniche" down to the lake and over Savoie pré-alpes. It has Restaurant/Lounge/Bar Le Dock directly on the lake side. The hotel is behind the route but still with a good view.

On the same route as Baron Tavernier with similar view. This is mainly a café/restaurant but has a few rooms.
