One night in Umbria: Hotel Duomo or Titignano Castle?
My husband and I are planning to spend 1 night in Umbria on our drive from Tuscany to Rome. We would probably be arriving in early afternoon and leaving the following morning around 10am, so not a lot of time for exploration - mostly taking in the views and relaxing.
I was originally planning on staying in Orvieto, but during my research I came across Titignano Castle. It is beautiful and has gotten good reviews (I realize it is off a winding road and somewhat isolated). In an email from Titignano, I am told that their restaurant is not open during the week, so I would only have breakfast there (I only mention this because many people rave about the dinners here).
I am also looking at Hotel Duomo, right in Orvieto. The Locanda Rosati is not available that night, as that was my first choice. The Hotel Duomo is in a good location and staying there would also allow us to drop our car and take the train into Rome the following day. I've tried to do the pros/cons list and I still can't make up my mind. Any advice from someone who is familiar with these properties would be greatly appreciated!

Hotel Duomo is very pleasant- perfect location and Orvieto is one of my favorite places in Italy. It is not large, so you'll have plenty of time to go to the cathedral and to walk around in the town.
One of my favorite things to do there is go to the shop/studio Corte Dei Miracoli di Alberto Bellini who is a fantastic terracotte artist. It is located at Laboratorio Piazza de Ranieri 13. You won't be disappointed! We have several of his creations in our living room and kitchen and people always ask us about them.
We love the passegiata in Orvieto- lots of Italians of all ages walking arm in arm, gesturing, talking enthusiastically, and having a wonderful time.

We stayed at Hotel Virgilio one time. It is located right across from the Cathedral and is inexpensive. We liked Hotel Duomo better. It is quieter and has a more substantial feel to it and has been recently remodeled.
