Looking for recommendation for a nice, but moderately priced place to stay in Bath - no car, so prefer centrally located.
Also - any recommendations on somewhere reasonable for a meal, afternoon tea, perhaps a nice pub for a couple of drinks at the end of the night (me - age 44 + my Mum so something quiet, where OK for two women)..
I believe there's a Christmas market starting Nov 27th too? Any info on that??

Another question - has anybody used the First Great Western 2 for 1 offers. Several of them for Bath but when print the vouchers doesn't give much info and wondering what the reaction of the restaurants/museums etc is when you present these...

I only used it for the Roman Baths. The ticket agent there insisted to check the rail tickets from BOTH of us.

We used 2 for 1 offers in London last year. Keep your train ticket stub or receipt to show with the voucher, and you should be fine.

Don't know what you mean by moderate price, but I highly recommend the Apple Tree Guest House. http://www.appletreeguesthouse.com/ It's &pound;70 - 90. Les and Lynsay are great. It truly is only a 10-minute, very pleasant walk to town. There is a nice pub just across the street, where we had a pretty decent meal -- pork chop, peas, mashed potatoes -- for &pound;7.95. We had a lovely tea in the Pump Room, which has great ambiance and you can take the waters if you really want.

We stayed at Harington's Hotel right in the center of Bath and it was perfect. You may have some trouble booking only one night at places though.

On 2nd thoughts Harrington's is more than I want to spend. Is $100 (or UK equiv which I believe right now would be around 65 - 70 pounds) an unreasonable goal?

We have stayed at Oldfield's B&amp;B which is quite close to Bath Spa rail station. It is a lovely home and the owners are very gracious. We were at the Bath Christmas Market last year and it is GREAT! Enjoy!!!

It's close to the train station and central Bath, but it's a pretty good haul uphill to get to it. But that's also what makes the view from the back spectacular.

gillybrit: Bath is a pricey place for hotels/B&amp;Bs. It is a beautiful city w/ thousands of visitors and most places at all decent will generally be in the &pound;75 - &pound;100+ double range. (approx. $115 - $150). You can probably find something for around &pound;65 - but it won't be fancy

Just be glad you weren't visiting last summer because &pound;75-&pound;100 would have been $150-$200.

Hi Gilly - Do you like Thai food?

I live near Bath, and two of my favourite places to eat in the city centre - Mai Thai and Sala Thai - are also among the best value in town.

They are both in Pierrepoint St. (- 3 mins walk from the cathedral).

Nearby Sally Lunn's is a renowned place for afternoon tea - as is the Roman Baths tea-room (- elegant but pricey) - which often has live musicians.

A pleasant cheaper option for tea/coffee is Manvers Street Church cafe (- same street as Mai Thai)

Pleasant rooms, quiet location.

I enjoyed an evening meal at the Loch Fyne Seafood Restaurant at the top of Milsom St (main shopping street). We've also eaten at Demuth's Vegetarian Restaurant, a few doors down from Sally Lunn's.
Tea in the Pump Rooms for its ambience, never mind the cost!

bellini: Yes, the Villa Magdala is nice. But is is also nearly twice gillybrit's budget.

gillybrit -- This may not matter to you, but we really liked that the Apple Tree Guest House was a <u>flat </u> walk to town. Some places would have required quite an effort.

I haven't been to Loch Fyne (mentioned by bellini above), but they have some great deals.

It has been a number of years ago already, but we enjoyed the Parade Park hotel b&amp;b. Good central location. It has a pub attached with a scooter theme (lambretta's).

I stumbled (not literally) into a tiny pub that I think was called The Coeur De Lion. Very small and cozy. Seems to me it was in a covered walkway in a central shopping area.

Bitter's, sallyky's and bellini's posts illustrate my comment about Bath being pricey. Unless you want to share a bath, most rooms in all three recommended properties are above your budget.

The Park Parade charges &pound;95 for a twin w/ ensuite bath
the Apple tree does list &pound;70 minimum for a double but they go up to &pound;90+. The Villa Magdalla = &pound;95-&pound;145.

The Paradise House charges &pound;65 - &pound;195 for doubles/twins-- so you might be able to book something in their smaller rooms that fits w/i your budget
