I've always been curious about EISENACH and am considering of staying at the Wartburg one of these days. Can you elaborate more on what really impressed you in Eisenach beyond the Wartburg?
I have to say that we enjoyed staying in MARBURG. We liked the way all the colorful timber houses straggled off into a vertical maze of meandering lanes. Our hotel was one of the timber houses just above the sloping main square. The cobblestones & timber houses just looked better in a hilly setting. There was no famous sight per se but we had fun exploring the layers of Marburg as it rose up to the thousand year old castle at the top.
We thought MARBURG was set almost like one of those old provencal hill towns in the Luberon complete with the tall spires of St Elisabeth church which was named after the canonized young grafin princess of Marburg.

IMO Eisenach doesn't hold a candle to Weimar e.g. The highlight is the Wartburg, really. The old town is nice, but just as nice as almost every old town in a mid-size town (I could name a hundred of that kind.)
However, I might be biased. Have been on Army duty there in 1988/89
