One day in Berchtesgaden - what should we see

We have one day with a car coming from Salzburg to spend in the Berchtesgaden area. Mid September and we are late 50's and our first time in the area.

What would you recommend us seeing or going?

We have two days after in the Hallstatt- St. Wolfgang area. After we leave Salzburg.

Thanks for tips you might have.

Take the Koenigsee boat cruise, get off at final stop and walk up to and then to end of Obersee (path runs along edge of lake) stunning turquoise water, forest, surrounded by mountains, a nice place for a beer and snack at the end.

It is a wonderful half day outing, you can make it longer by stopping for lunch at the beer garden between the 2 lakes on your way back. A magic place to slow down and just enjoy.

Herrenchiemsee or Königsee would make for lovely outings. So would a drive along a portion (or all) of the Großglockner High Alpine Road. Having been to Herrenchiemsee and Königsee, and having driven the Großglockner on a picture perfect blue sky day, I would be inclined to drive the alpine road again. There are numerous photo stops so that whomever is driving can enjoy the view; additionally, there are several places to eat or to have a picnic.

As an alternative, if you have any interest in the dark history of Hitler and the Nazi Party, you may want to explore the Eagle's Nest area as well as a visit to the Nazi Documentation Center. Suggest at least a half day for this activity. This activity obviously is not for everyone but it is history that happened. If not of interest, the lake visit is wonderful.

Even if you are not interested in the links with Hitler, a visit to Hitlers Eagles Nest is a fabulous day out. We were there less than a week ago on a fine sunny day. It was an easy trip by bus from Berchtesgaden, then another bus up the steep mountain road, then finally a 124 m walk along a tunnel to the final ride 124 m up inthe shiny brass lift.

The views on a good day are nothing short of spectacular. A final walk to the top or lunch sitting perched on the terrace with wonderful views all around. Possibly not a trip for poor weather.

We experienced none of the dreaded crowds we read of in all the reviews .

The previous day we did the Konigsee boat ride and walk to the next lake and it was terrific too. It's a beautiful part of the world and you can hardly go wrong.

Helsie, glad to know you did the lake trip, hope your travels are going well.
If I remember rightly, you were going to stop in Mittenwald, too, I hope you love it like I do
