I don't believe there are any rental cars on Mull. In fact there is only one private taxi service on the island. How are you getting around on the rest of your trip on the mainland? By car? If so just take your car over on the Ferry from Oban. Otherwise you'll have to use public tranport on Mull.

There's nothing resembling a major car rental company on Mull, but Mackay's (or MacKay's? I remember the name but not the capitalization) Garage in Tobermory rents cars. Try doing a Google search for something like "tobermory garage" or "tobermory car hire" and see if it turns up. But I don't know about Craignure, which is where you'll most probably arrive -- there's almost nothing there, so I very much doubt there's a car rental.

As Janis suggested, taking a car over on the ferry is a better (if more expensive) bet. I'm sure that several of the garages in Oban rent cars. You could contact the local tourist board -- try looking at wwww.oban/org.uk.

Found the answer to my own question: This is what I found:

A useful web site for buses and transport on Mull is www.mict.co.uk/travel <http://www.mict.co.uk/travel> . There are 2 Hire car companies here on Mull one in Craignure at the Bayview Garage Tel 01680 812 444 or in Tobermory at MacKay's garage Tel 01688 302 103.

I was able to make a reservation at Bayview Garage by phone.
