My wife and I are considering a trip to the Italian Amalfi Coast region and I've seen some pictures and was wondering how much if any of the the travel there is on roads with sheer drops, especially without guardrails. I've driven the California coast highway going north and driven around Lake Tahoe counterclockwise and did not enjoy either and will not go up the mountian lookouts in Hawaii or other places with small roads and sheer drops. I can't help it I just don't enjoy these things. Thanks for any info.

The whole drive has walls (stone or concrete) on the water side. It's narrow from Positano east to Salerno, and heavy traffic. But it's not a scary road to drive at all.

I found the bus ride on the coastal road unnerving, less because of the drop-off than because of the narrowness and the curves. Maybe I'm a big baby.

After that first bus ride, I only took ferries to get around. You should know that that is an option, and that you can get to anyplace you want that way. (With the exception of Ravello, and I didn't find the short ride there bad at all.)

If you found Tahoe worrying, you'll definitely be more concerned along the Amalfi coast.

Apart from anything else (and the Italian drops are more precipitous), other drivers' behaviour is more...well, let's say exhilarating.

The Coast road does have a guard rail.

My Lady Wife suffers from vertigo. It was hell for her.

There is a solid stone wall between the road and the drop off. It isn;t scary in the least.

That said - I can see where being in a bus - so high above the walls - might be scarier than being in a car.

You guys should go to Hong Kong and ride bus #6 on HK Island. And sit on the <b>upper deck</b>!
