She does just want her "first leg" to be Portugal, because she has fallen in love with the language and culture. She presented her itinerary tonight so has demonstrated she is on top of it. Included all transport, connections, breakfast, lunch dinner and excursions. This is a trip she wanted to do on her own before meeting a girl from Italy in her home who was an exchange student this year in the U.S. who wants her American friends to visit her. Again, many thanks.

Really, this straight-talk-"snap out of it" advice is why I value the Fodors community so greatly. THANK YOU!!
She sounds like the sort of person who will do very well and have a wonderful time in Europe. Responsible and outgoing is good.

She sounds like shes got it under control .. doing all that research already makes her sound more with it than many adults on travel forums who I see post questions like " I am going to Paris next week what should I see" lol
I do understand being nervous about her going solo though.. my daughter went with friends and I was nervous all the time .. but she was fine.. going alone would be scarier for a parent.. that I do understand.. However she may meet some other girls at the hostals and bum around with them. When I was 23 my friend and i did the europe thing.. and twice we had solo girls team up with us for certain parts of our trip, one American girl and one from South Africa..

Christina..
My daughter did almost three months in europe at age 19 and yes.. SHE PAID HER OWN WAY.. all of it.. She got a job at McDonalds at age 15.. after school and weekends.. We didn't push her to work at that age.. she asked us.. we had to agree to letting her work before age 16 .. and our only condition was if her grades slipped she would have to quit.
Her grades remained good.. she saved all her money for four years.. She did her trip and came back and just finished her second year of college.. she worked for almost a year before enrolling , her father and I ( divorced ) each pay 1/3 of her schooling.. she pays the other 1/3 ( plus I sometimes pick things up for her at Costco like mega boxes of granola bars and packages of tp and take them up to her.. but she is doing very well managing on her own)
So some kids can and DO pay their way on these trips.. her friends had to pay their own way too..
