Old sailing ships to visit along the Cote D'Azur/French Mediterranean?
My husband is interested in seeing old sailing ships in this area. I thought of maybe Marseille, Cannes. Neither of us have been to this area so we are in the dark. I'm reading Fodor's France 2005 as fast as I can but haven't come across anything yet.
We never got to Portsmouth, England to see some ships there and he was broken hearted.
We will be going to the area in mid October this year and spending about 5-6 days between Provence and Cote d'Azur. We haven't pinned down the area exactly yet.
Can anyone help us?

I don't know of any offhand, but you might add Toulon to your list to check out. There's a big French naval base in the city. In Cannes and some of the other resort towns you'll find yachts with sails, but we've never seen old ships.

aggiemom, One day you should plan a trip around the itinerary of The Tall Ship's Race in Europe. That's a race with 70-100 old sailing boats from 20 or more countries.
In 2005 the ports of call were (are) Waterford, Cherbourg, Newcastle and Fredrikstad.
Last year they were in Antwerp and it is quite a spectacle seeing all those ships sail into our city (literally, as the quay on which they are mooring is in the old city centre).
There are always boats that can be visited.
Next years race has an interesting itinerary:
Saint Malo, France Thu 6 Jul – Sun 9 Jul
Lisbon, Portugal Thu 20 Jul – Sun 23 Jul
Cádiz, Spain Wed 26 Jul – Sat 29 Jul
La Coruña, Spain Mon 7 Aug – Thu 10 Aug
Antwerp, Belgium Sat 19 Aug – Tue 22 Aug
You can read more on http://www.tallshipsraces.com/

aggiemom,
Send your e-mail address to me at [email protected] and I'll forward an interesting article (from the BP site) on the Armada celebration in Rouen, with some 35 old ships--I tried posting here but it was deleted, possibly because of the length.

There is a group of 'tall ships' touring the west coast this summer. They were in Victoria a while back. Here is a link to their schedule(?).
