Oktoberfest - reasonable places to stay???

WE have a group of a minimum of 6 and up to 12 people traveling to Oktoberfest 2000. Since I understand people starting booking for the next year as soon as this one is over and it's the millinium Oktoberfest, I thought we would start searching for advice. Does anyone know of some good places to stay for all us? A small inn with 5 or 6 rooms would work real well. Some of us can double up if the rooms are big enough, though I know in Europe sometimes that isn't always possible. Also, has anyone taken the train from Amsterdam to where the beer fest is held? Do you know the price? Thanks for any advice.
Mary,
A good idea. You may want to talk to the Oktoberfest Guides (www.oktoberfest-guides.com). I haven't ever used them before, but I know others who have. You won't be able to book a Beer tent with only twelve people (I believe that you need 20), but if you get there early in the day, you shouldn't have any problems getting a seat. If you are looking for cheaper places to stay, since you mentioned doubling up, I'd look into pensions. Again, the guides should be able to help.

Tickets form Amsterdam to Munich are $264 for first class and $171 for second. It is an 8.5 hour trip. These prices will probably not be good in two years, but should give you a reference.

Good Luck! It sounds like fun.

I would try the Brauerie Gasthof Aying, it's right outside of Munich (12k). We have stayed their several times. I can give you their phone number, etc. if you are interested. They are also listed in Karen Brown's Charming Inns and Itineraries of Germany. It is my "bible" for traveling in Germany. I think up to this point we have stayed in 13 of her recommendations. She also has a website WWW.Karenbrown.com
If I can be of any help just e-mail me.
Lori

Mary,
Congratulations on your foresight in planning so far in advance of your intended trip. For inexpensive accommodations contact some of the regional tourist offices in the Munich area. You'll be provided with listings of hotels and inns, their amenities and prices. (Recognize that prices will no doubt change between now and 2000, but they'll serve as guidelines in your budget planning.) The suburban areas around Munich are well served by the train system; in some cases augmented by busses. Here are some addresses for you to contact:

Funf-Seen-Land (southwest of Munich)
Fremdenverkehrsverband
Starnberger Funf-Seen-Land
Postfach 1607
8130 Starnberg

Pfaffenwinkel (south, southwest of Munich)
Fremdenverkehrsverband
Pfaffenwinkel
Schlossplatz 1 Postfach 40
8920 Schongau

Wendelstein - Inn und Mangfall (southeast of Munich)
Fremdenverkehrsverband
Wendelstein e.V.
Landratsamt Rosenheim
Willelsbacherstrasse 53
8200 Rosenheim

Contact me directly via Email if you'd like more information.

I will be going to Octorberfest this comming September. I will be using a
couple of timeshare exchanges. I found this a great way to get great accomodations in Europe. We will be staying at a 1 bedroom condo that sleeps 4 in Mittrefels which is 65 miles from Munich, but I understand that buses and trains are available. In 1995 We stayed
at other timeshares in Howenschangau and
Oberstaufen. If you know of anyone that has a timeshare they can get you a guest
certificate. This should run you around $500.00 for the week. We love our exchanges. If you need more info e-mail me
Good luck
Try Hotel Uhland on Uhlandstrasse in Munich. It is located about 2 blocks from Octoberfest grounds. Great little hotel. Have stayed there four times in the past 6 years. Usually priced at about $90 for a double, however time of year will increase rates.

Mary-I lived at Hotel Uhland while studying abroad - it is a great location for the Octoberfest, but it may be pricey during the fest - 2 blocks.
The have a web site:
http://sun8.netplace.de/uhland/enwelcome.html

On other travels I have also stayed at the Pension Westfalia, that is also right across the street. Peter speaks very good english.

The other place I have stayed while in Munich is Hotel-Pension Utzelmann on Pettenkoferstrasse. It is a short walk to the fest grounds. Great overall Munich location though and it is nice and clean.
Tel:089/594889
Fax:089/596228
Limited english-faxing is best.

Have a great time!

I have also stayed at the Pension Westfalia. It is across the street from the Oktoberfest grounds, so I don't know how quiet it is then. Otherwise, it is a very nice, clean place to stay, and Peter provides excellent service. The price is very reasonable.
