Oh - there was fish. Just no shellfish (except for three tiny crab cakes amuse bouche which was wonderful) nor salmon. But five of the 6 mains options were fish.

"...mini GTG at Fortnums. did you have the champagne flight, BTW?"

The last time we were at the wine bar, DH and I decided to share a bottle of wine and decided to try a lovely Mosel white that wasn't on the menu. The corkage fee at the time was only £5 -- I see that cost has tripled. But still a nice option if you want something particular and you're not watching your pence too closely.

probably cheaper than the champagne flight, WT! we like Mosel too and it's increasingly difficult to get here. I wonder if Fortnum's still stock it?

glad there was fish, JJ, but it's not likely to have been cornish - as I say, the boats tend not to go out between Christmas and New Year.

Sounds wonderful. May have to try it sometime but not this coming trip as I'm taking family. Budget won't allow for 8 of us at a Michelin starred restaurant. Will have to wait for one of my solo trips. The venison scrumpet sounds yummy.

history traveller - I suspect you are aware of this but many decent restaurants in London are similar to those in other places in that they offer very good deals at lunchtime.

Perhaps you could run to a lunchtime treat or two? even a pie and a pint add up when there are 8 of you!

Now that's a possibility. I usually skip lunch, but I'm realizing that traveling with 4 other adults and three kids means I'm going to have to be more flexible. I'm sure all will want lunch and that my usual pot of tea and a piece of cake just won't do.

Glad to have come up with a useful suggestion, HT. IME kids especially need feeding at regular intervals else they become terminally grumpy. In fact if we hadn't sat down somewhere and at least seen a menu by 1pm, in her early-mid-teens DD was unbearable. In the end I would factor potential eating places into our itinerary so that we all knew that there would be a reasonable option or two at the right time and then we could relax.

and IME a snack and a fizzy drink followed by something else at tea-time can add up to the same as a proper sit-down lunch.

Good advice. My grandkids are much the same. Voracious appetites even at the ages of 10 and 11. Besides I'm guessing they'll need a bit of a sit down with all the sightseeing. I know I will.

check your local Aldi of all places - they stock German wines and not all dirt-cheap either.

I had the dry white wine flight and they picked 5 cheeses for us to share that matched our wine selection. Nice little basket of bread and biscuits. I think they might have added another cheese...seemed like more than 5 to me.

It was a very nice mini get together and the 2 hours ran by.

If you go to the wine bar, I'd suggest sitting at the bar over a table if possible. The guy's behind the bar are very knowledgeable and great to chat to while you drink your selection.

Have a happy new year JanisJ and enjoy the fire works. We were able to upgrade on the way back so looking forward to a very comfy flight

it sounds lovely, kmowatt and a lot of fun. Not sure when I'm likely to get to Fortnums but if/when I do, I'll bear your tips in mind!

have a good journey home.

Good point, Pal - I keep forgetting that they have such a good wine selection. I shall have to have another look in February when we get home from our trip to Cuba.

I just had a look at the Fortum's website for the wine bar…wondering where we could dump the kids for an hour. Next trip I guess. The foie gras pate with figs sounds fab. I'll have that with the Cava.

a friend of mine just glimpsed janis coming out of the London Dungeon with a Madame Tussauds plastic carrying bag - beware eyes and ears are everywhere!

So many good suggestions, and enough left over for several other people. Thanks all.
