Done the Globe a few times. Had a dear friend who used to let me use her flat in Highgate, so yep, done that. William Morris - check.

Haven't been to that new Kings Cross development so I'll definitely look into that, and the exhibition looks good so they could fill a couple of hours. Would be an easy tube ride back too.

Still open to suggestions . . . (I do have one other morning open so could fit KingsX in there.)

I would go for a winter walk in one of the parks, or maybe Hampstead Heath/Kenwood. Or even along the river in the Hammersmith area. Or St Dunstan in The East.

Then coffee or hot chocolate somewhere warm before heading home for dinner and fireworks

when I worked in London, I'd go a long way to avoid Kings Cross - the only time I used to go there was to go to a magistrate's court and have breakfast at a nearby greasy spoon - the clientelle at the court was interesting to say the least!

how things have changed.

Have you experience the Tudor Christmas at Hampton Court Palace?

annhig - how funny! I agree, a few years ago I wouldn't have dreamed to have the Kings Cross area on my list of places to visit...and yet here I am wanting to visit the area, and maybe stop in St Pancras for a glass of champagne at Eurostar bar too! London continues to gentrify further and further out...

I only have a few hours. HCP is much too far. But yes, I have been there over the holidays.

Kings Cross and the Searcy's Champagne bar at St Pancras could fill the bill.

I love that bar! So nice that they have blankets and foot heaters! Too bad I fly home on the 30th Janis...I'd gladly meet you in kings cross and St Pancras...do you have time for a get together outside of that?

I return to London from Cheltenham on the 27th and fly back home on the 30th...somewhat open right now

Here's another idea! Go to the Wine Bar at F&M...they have interesting wine flights and a great cheese board...the guys behind the bar are really into their wines and really chatty. I found it a good afternoon on my last trip

I agree with the suggestion of the Estorick . It's a really nice little gallery and walking through Islington is interesting. It would work well if you only have a couple of hours.

The Horniman is also a good suggestion if you're interested in ethnographic art, musical instruments or natural history. The Dulwich Picture Gallery also makes a nice trip.

Sorry for the multiple posts it won't let me add the links. Here's my take on the Dulwich Picture Gallery...

Have you been to the Museum of the Docklands? If you'll already be at Borough Market what about the Liberty exhibit at thee Museum of Fashion and textiles which is nearby?

I've been to the Dulwich and Horniman but it has been just ages. I'd usually try to do both together since they are practically neighbors so I think that is too much to bite off for this trip but when I go back in the spring possibly.

I haven't been in the Wine Bar at F&M -- I'm going there one morning to look for this trip's enamel box, so maybe I'll pop in for a bite/drink. I see they have a Champagne/smoked salmon flight three sparkling wines and three types of smoked salmon . . . Now THAT sounds good O

kmowatt: I hadn't thought to try for a GTG because that is such a hectic time for a lot of people and all of my evenings -- well the dance card is full

But I do have some free time noonish/early afternoon on the on 28th - F&M's wine bar???

Sounds like a plan Janis. Let's coordinate closer to the day. That Champagne wine flight sounds perfect for an afternoon

If you're near F&M: there's a beautiful bookshop with a bar in between F&M and Waterstones; Assouline. Gorgeous shop and chic little bar.

There's an early show at 6pm at the Comedy Store. Your type of thing?

Another rec for the F&M wine bar -- but it can be quite crowded at lunchtime, whether it's with shoppers or people from the media scene (I saw some of the same people there that I'd see regularly at The Wolseley). If you can get there a little after the noon rush, it's more relaxed with better service.

i just had to look at the F&M wine bar to see what it's going to cost [that's the cornish in my coming out]

https://www.fortnumandmason.com/restaurants/wine-bar

£45 for wine and some smoked salmon ???? oh my ears and whiskers.

to be fair, some of the other dishes are more reasonable but the wine is seriously expensive the lowest being £8.50/175 ml glass - that's almost Jamie Oliver prices!

[it's only jealously, JJ - have a great time with kmowatt]

"£45 for wine and some smoked salmon ???? oh my ears and whiskers. "

But that IS three glasses of Champs and three different salmon varieties

(probably tiny pours but I can't drink 3 glasses of champagne at one sitting anyway )

I'm going to Outlaws quite late Monday night for dinner so £45 for Champagne/Salmon might end up a bargain >

ok - with 3 glasses of champers at F&M prices it begins to look, if not a bargain, then half-way reasonable.

I'll come and drink the champagne that you can't manage.

I'd be interested to read what you think about Outlaws - his flagship 2 star restaurant is about an hour's drive away on the north coast [of Cornwall] but we've never eaten there. Perhaps we'll treat ourselves this Christmas!
