Oil Spill
Does anyone have current knowledge of the status and effects of the oil spill? How bad was/is it in specific towns? What has proven to be the effect on fisheries? Is seafood still generally available on menus?

Thanks

How did you know s/he meant Galicia, or even Spain? I didn't.

If the question is about the Prestige, I believe the answer is that there is still oil on beaches in Galicia and there is an ongoing undersea environmental disaster.

French beaches are opened but no contact with the water is allowed but the Spanish authorities are being criticised by their scientists, this time for an irresponsible decision regarding fishing.

Fishing has been authorised in many regions of Galician waters since early in March, even though the sunken tanker continues to leak oil, and deposits are still being collected from the sea floor close to the coast.

Beaches have been declared clean, and sea fishing is permitted in some sectors but Galician fishermen have hired their own scientists to assess the cleanliness of the waters and whether the shellfish are no longer contaminated.

A Spanish minister reckons that the oil still leaking from the Prestige (officially 1 or 2 tonnes a day, but there are other reports of 5 tonnes a day) is disappearing because in 10 to 20 hours, it dissolves into the water, or evaporates into the air. The stuff that is arriving on Galician shores is old oil, has been in the sea for a month and, because it has degraded, will cause minimal damage.

If you speak Spainsh you may find this site helpful

http://www.ccmm-prestige.cesga.es/
I don't know, Charlie, I thought the humor was pretty good. Perhaps one just needs a sense of humor though.
I am curious though, which oil spill is this the subject of and when? Sadly seems to be the case these days, as soon as it is time to go to the beach, an oil tanker breaks up near the shore.
Sheila,
I am impressed as always with how up-to-date you are on world news and events..
sheila - thank you for the info. Most helpful. I thought it appropriate to think that lweber was talking about the Prestige as the other spills happened in '89, '67 and '93 and I believe have little effect on todays travel. Lola - I do have a sense of humor, but when somebody posts a legitimate question on this site seeking assistance, I fail to see the humor in a 3 word response that has nothing to do with the query, but indeed may be construed as an insult. Who knows - lweber might have been talking about Iraq!
