We were in Innsbruck a couple of years ago in the end of Sptember and it was pleasant - in the 50's. It looks like the average temp in Innsbruck in Oct will be in the upper 40's. How much colder will it be up in the mountains? Maybe there's a local on the board who can help.

If you are able to go farther south from Bolzano, you'll find pretty nice weather on the south slopes of the Alps. It can get up into the 70's in the daytime around the Garda area, but the normal high would be in the low 60's. Good luck.

Temps fluctuate a lot from night to day this time of year in these parts--especially near Bozen / Süd Tirol. In the mountains, count on colder nights, with the potential for very warm weather during the afternoon.
Last October, when staying at our favorite Süd Tirolean hotel (in Welschnofen/Nova Levante--about 14 km up the mountain from Bozen), I layed out sunbathing and sweating like crazy in the afternoon, but at night, the temps dropped over 30 degrees F!
You will love Bolzano. If you have time, Merano is also very nice. If you want a very very relaxing time in a wonderful setting and at attractive prices, I highly recommend this hotel: www.hotel-engel.com

crckwc,
My pleasure.
If you do decide to book at hotel-engel, here are two hints:
1) request a room in the new wing, as they are far superior to the old wing and cost the same
2) if you stay less than 3 nights, you pay a small supplement (perhaps 10 Euro p/p/night), so if you can squeeze out 3 nights, it's an even better value.
