Well over 8 hours door to door when you factor in the rental process at each end, traffic, meal/pit stops, etc. You can train all the way from Nice to Verona. Actually, you might think about getting off before Verona at Sirmione. Spend Monday 10/24 seeing a bit of the lake. On Tuesday 10/25, train to Verona, store luggage at the station and explore the town. Train to Venice in the late afternoon/early evening.
I have that same question, but my dad insists it'll be better and faster. I'm not convinced.

I have not had the chance to read this entire thread so please excuse me if I missed out on something. What I would do with your time is somewhat different but than I am not you so take this with a grain of salt. I am ok with your Paris itinerary and might even cut one day but would probably leave it alone as I love Paris and you might have a rainy day or two in October. I would skip Chamonix, its a place to ski and hike etc. You are going to lose almost 2 days to get to and from Chaminox for one day and you have about a one in three chance of bad weather at that time of year. Take the TGV to Avignon which is about two hours and spend the saved time there in that part of Provence where there is a lot to see. If you do not have a car base yourself in Avignon and if you have a car base yourself somewhere like St Remy. Your itinerary for Nice seems reasonable although I actually prefer staying in someplace like Cap Antibes. Easier to get around however without car from Nice. I would than depart from your itinerary and fly Nice to Venice. Would spend a minimum of two nights but preferably three in Venice. Have not been to lake Garda or Verona so have no opinion. I think four nights in Florence with some day trips is fine and another four nights in Rome is also ok.

I did! I'll do a trip report soon, but it was a lot of fun!
