Oberammergau, then on to Spain and Portugal
Hi - My husband and I will be travelling in mid September to Oberammergau for the Passion Play. We have already purchased our tickets for the play but yet to purchase our flight tickets. In saying that, we are aware that we will need to arrive into Munich and then take a train or bus to Oberammergau. After this, we are planning on visiting Spain and Portugal and I will post separately on those forums re those country plans. But on this forum, I was hoping you may be able to guide us as to how we can travel from Oberammergau to either Madrid/Barcelona or Porto/Lisbon. We love train journeys so are looking for any recommendations on best train route. I have looked at Bahn.de and AVE high speed trains which goes from Munich-Mannheim-Marseille, then Marseille to Barcelona but would like to know if there are other routes to say Porto or Lisbon or Madrid which we could consider before we plan our travels. The entry city will determine our exit city for our departure back to Australia, as we plan to do a loop for our travel in Spain and Portugal. Thank you.

I think this is one of the few occasions when I would say fly. Getting to Madrid by train from Oberammergau is a major undertaking with a lot of changes and about 24 hours of travel. Even longer and more complicated to Portugal.

A train ride either trough Switzerland (from Ulrichsbruecke-Fuessen) or Stuttgart - Alsace to Barcelona may make sense with 2 or 3 longer stop overs along the itinerary. If you havent' time for that or if you want to go up to Porto you better fly.
The shortest train ride goes through Paris, takes a full long day and costs much more than a flight..
